stud tail ?
Well my poor little Rusty has been pulling fur out his tail now for about 3 weeks but I didn't realise until about a week ago. I had his man bits removed soon after I noticed this as he was just over 8 months anyway his tail was getting oily/waxy about 4" from his back where he was pulling it out from so I put it down to stiud tail . If I wash his tail he doesn't touch it for about 24 hours and as soon as it starts to get a little oily off he goes , its as if he thinks theres something stuck to his tail so he removes it ! His skin has bin ok where he's removed the fur but I did notice yesterday night when I was cleaning him it is starting to get a bit blotchy (light brown) , he's not had any changes to his diet but I did change his litter to cats best which I have changed back to be on the safe side , I'm very sure he's not stressed so I could only put it down to stud tail but I'm no vet .Anyway i think I've left it a little late to cure by my self so he's going to the vets later . Any advice or experience with this would be helpful

Hi Paul
Try not to worry too much - stud tail is caused by the male hormones and once the hormones settle down, the stud tail should stop by itself.
I think there are a few treatments you can use such as goop or even mild washing up liquid (apply to dry fur then wash off). If it starts to get greasy in between then you can even try talcum powder rubbed into the area to soak up some of the grease.
My old stud boy used to get it really bad but within a few weeks of being neutered, his cleared up absolutely fine.
Might want to get it checked at the vet anyway but I would think that all will be OK

Sounds like stud tail to me, but get it checked out... I bred a lovely cream boy and was going to keep him but in the end sold him at about ten months, as he was getting bullied!
His new owner rang me about two months later, the glands in his tail had severly impacted and the oil couldn't escape thru them so the whole area was a minefield of pus filled blackheads! Guess who had to go back the next day with 'goop' and shampoo. He behaved really well and put up with my squeezing and washing and was neutered when his tail had healed. It took about three months but his tail never impacted with greasy muck again, I think his fur had covered the problem and as his new owner was long sighted she hadn't seen the small spots until they had grown and started to bleed!
Goop is a white greasy gel that you rub into oily areas on your cat's coat, after five minutes it is washed off with cat shampoo in the shower... it really does work and is available on the purrsonal touch website.

When I picked him up at 16 weeks he was a bit dirty ie eyes, nose and ears and he did seem a bit run down like he has a bit of a cold . He had all his jabs , he got his eye infection after about 2 weeks of being home and his stalls wasn't very firm so he used to get in a bit of a mess with his fur on his back legs , put him on a good quality food after doing my research on wet food and now he looks lovely and healthy other than his tail , he got his uti about 3 weeks ago which cleared up in 3 days of antibiotics thank god , its been a bit of a fight to keep him healthy and now he's tail playing up , broke my heart seeing him pulling his fur out

Such a shame when they are poorly - glad he is on the mend now though and hope you can get his stud tail sorted out. It isn't a major problem fortunately and I think it's more of a case of breaking the habit of him chewing at it now!
