Normal for Maine Coon eyes?
My red 7 month old Maine Coon male has always had slightly visible eyelids but the last couple of weeks his the skin next to the nose has changed and has become constantly gunked up and slightly sore looking, is this normal for Maine Coons of his age or should I get it checked out asap?
The skin around his eyes next to the nose seems to be opening up but I've seen this on a lot of older red maine coon pictures. Is it just because he's growing very fast?
Our female maine coon is currently undergoing trips to the vets as she can't stop sneezing, could it be herpes?Last edited by MaineMagic; 23rd June 2011 at 09:20 PM.

Could the corners be getting gunky because of him teething & that in turn is making the skin really red & sore,if the eyes themselves are red vet visit is a must...

Has he got a little scratch from playing etc? is he eating / behaving normally otherwise? Sneezing and sore eyes could be related but as in different cats unlikely. Have to agree with trip to the vets as that does look sore x

It's definitely not normal, please get him checked out. Give it a bathe with cotton wool soaked in warm salty water.

We've bathed his eyes the last two nights, we don't think it's a scratch as it's both eyes. He's eating and playing normally but we'll get him checked.

We bathed his eyes for a few nights and it cleared up, we've also seen another red Maine Coon with eyes exactly the same so it was just the weeping and not the tear duct shape that was a worry. Our other maine coon results have come back from the vets and she has Calici virus. Chances are she's past it on to him. His back gums are swollen but we don't know if it's teething or Calici related. We'll keep an eye on it for a week or two then whip him off to the vets.

Benji has been tested positive for Calici too :( Chances are yes - she has passed it on to him. Benji's eyes look much like your baby's, the third eyelid is slightly visible and red. However if his eyes have always been like this it could possibly be that he has been a carrier the whole time and actually passed it on to your girl. Storm is negative for Calici so it's Benji who is the carrier. Benji's gums are red and swollen too, partly because of teething but partly because of stomatitis. He is currently on Interferon treatment for the calici and already within two days we can see a difference in the gums - whether the difference is permanent (i.e. the immune system kills off the virus) or temporary (immune system being stimulated by the interferon is simply helping the symptoms while he is on it) remains to be seen. He will be on it for the next two months!
