I've also just started cleaning (well trying to clean!) the kits teeth, also with my finger - at the moment I'm doing it every other day, but I'd be really interested to hear what others say too. Our vet said that if I rub my finger around the outside of their teeth they will lick it off and clean the inside of their teeth as their tongue is rough ...
Can anybody advise us please?
Regularly feeding raw meat including bones is the best way to keep teeth and gums clean and healthy. Start with some raw chicken cut up very small and work up to strips of steak; then aim for a chicken wing :) Add as part of regular diet, your cat will love it and his teeth and gums will be healthier and you will see fantastic benefits in temperament, condition etc. I am not saying feed raw only but I am sure Peter etc will back me up on this one xx
I also feed raw chicken wings and necks to keep my lads' teeth clean. And they absolutely love it.
I can't imagine it's easy to clean your cat's teeth - or enjoyable for anyone.
That's great, thanks - I'll try them on the wings :-) I did try some lightly poached chicken breast a while ago, but none of them ate it ... they thought it was a great game, took the pieces out of their dishes and chased them around the kitchen floor - I spent the next half an hour on my hands and knees playing 'find the chicken bits'!!
Apparently when they chase and play with their food that's a precursor to actually eating it. It shows they are interested.
Try them again and they might just get on and eat it.
When I first gave mine chicken wings that's exactly what they did - throw them around the kitchen.
It can take a while to convince them that it's actually FOOD.
One morning I put a chicken wing in the bin which had been tossed all over the place overnight, and 5 minutes later Monty had pinched it out of the bin and was eating it, crunch, crunch! Now he just eats them without the gymnastics!
