MC with post natal depression?
This might seem an odd question, but has anyone had any experience of a cat with what can only be described as possible post natal depression? One of my maine coons lost her kittens due to complications and since returning from the vets a few weeks ago without any babies with her she seems quite odd. At first she seemed to look around the house calling for them, but after she had stopped doing this she seemed to just keep sleeping in her cage that we had put out for her to recover in. Now a few weeks have passed and she appears to be getting worse because she has lost her appetite and even though I try to tempt her with her favourites, she is not interested. Wanted some advice before I took her to the vets and they charged me for unecessary treatment if there was a simple answer.
Thankyou

Is there any chance she could have an infection? That could be causing all of the symptoms that you are describing. I guess depression could be a possibility but for it to be carrying on this long would be a concern.
I would definately get medical complications ruled out first and then there are some homeopathic remedies that could possibly help but I would need to dig out my remedies book first! Will message you later with the details if that helps.
Keep us posted on how she gets on.

Hi Louise
Thankyou for replying
Since I last posted I have spoken to the vet as was getting concerned, and she has said for me to take Bear in today to see what is happening. She has an appointment at 5.20pm so I will know a little bit more after that hopefully.
The remedies book sounds very good too.
Thanks again, will keep you updated

I will dig it out later and let you know what it says. I have never had a problem with my girls except for our January litter when we lost 3 because they were premature and Star was getting very upset when she knew they were fading. She had the others to occupy her though so I think that helped.
Let me know how you get on at the vet

Well, we have returned from the vet together, which is something! I wasn't sure whether Bear was going to be kept in overnight, but at the moment the vet is happy for her to come home. She gave Bear some antibiotic injections and pain relief just incase, and also took some blood to be tested and we will get the results tomorrow. I still can't get her to eat anything -even treats like prawns, tuna or her fave felix
Sorry to hear about your January litter. I think it is so sad when something like that happens.
I will be keeping an eye on Bear until her appointment tomorrow, and I will let you know the outcome.

Poor Bear and poor you. It is so hard when something is wrong and they can't tell us. Hopefully if it is an infection then it will clear up quickly and she will be back to normal within a couple of days. At least you will get the blood tests back quickly though so you know more about what you are dealing with. With regards to her feeding, have you tried her on some raw? Maybe a bit of beef steak chopped up or some lamb heart? Most cats go mad for it and it is really, really good for them too.
With our January litter it was heartbreaking but we were very lucky to get 3 beautiful kittens that made it through and one of them has stayed here with us as a future breeding girl.
No matter what any breeder says, it never gets easier when you lose a kitten and you never learn to accept it either...
Hope Bear improves overnight and hopefully hear some good news tomorrow.

Oh Jo, hope Bear is ok, and that the results come back ok tomorrow, but I'm sure the vet wouldn't have sent her home if he was really worried about her. Please let us know tomorrow how she is and until then big hugs from me and Harry x
Louise, i didn't know about Star's loss, that must have been awful for you all. I don't think that anyone can get used to losing little ones. Pleased though that the three others are doing well. x

HI Jo
If you go onto this website Holistic Pet Supplies - Complementary Remedies for Dogs, Cats & Horses you can go to their cat section and look at all the different holistic remedies on there. If you look at the emotions bit I am sure you will be able to pick something up. Maybe something like bachs rescue remedy would be good if she has been through the trauma of losing babies and then a possible infection...could just help to perk her up a little
Hope the results have come back OK today
