My Rosie was done at 6 months. She was SO upset by the Elizabethan collar she came home wearing.
I bought her a small baby vest with poppers, put that on and took her collar off. She did not scratch the wound at all, and we were both much happier. She also liked it and looked quite cute. Good Luck

I am surprised why some vets tell you to let kitty wear a collar after spaying... neither of my girls got one. Not even the moggy we had when I lived with my parents, and that was about 35 years ago. The vets just said: "Take care she doesn't lick that spot too much, and if she does and it starts to look raw bring her back in."

Neutering is a rather trivial operation. The cats are under for just a few minutes and typically show little or no effects once they wake up. I know it is stressful for the owner, but it is so much less invasive a procedure than spaying a female.

We left one male until 7 months and he sprayed a wall the day before his operation was scheduled. Just a slight hint of male urine odor to us, but to this day a cat will occasionally still sniff the wall (it has been about four years since the episode). I gather not all males will spray, but it is a huge risk in my opinion, so 6 months sounds good!

Have never needed the collars for either girls or boys, BTW.

The vet gave me a lampshade collar for Freyja when she was done and just said that if she doesn't leave the wound alone, stick the lampshade on; if she doesn't worry at it, ditch the collar. Freyja really didn't pay the stitches too much attention at all - just cleaned it when she was grooming everything else, so we never needed the collar. I'll wait and see how Wicca reacts next week.

Good luck for the girls! I'm trying not to stress about Dudley. He just seems so small, even for a little op!

Dudley's knackers have had a reprieve... At least for the next 10 days. He's still a bit snuffly and the vet deemed him unfit for anaesthesia. I had a feeling this might happen! He's been given more antibiotics and has to go back in 10 days.

Awww... ten more days of apprehension for you. But probably for the best.
    Hope he gets well soon!

I'm happy to say that Dudley is now a neuter. He's still a bit sneezy but we had a different vet this time and she was happy to go ahead. He wad done this morning and seems absolutely normal and is running around like a mad thing. I keep flinching when he's climbing up stuff and wrestling with sylvester but he doesn't seem to understand the concept of 'taking things easy for a while'!
