Thread: Plastic bag scare!

We had something similar with one of our kittens - we had a spider toy that had elastic on it so I tied it to their pen for them to play with. One of the boys managed to get it wrapped round his middle and neck about 3 times and was really tight. Lucky that I was only out of the room for a minute otherwise could have been awful.

I now don't let them have anything with elastic on.

Yep,have had the elastic from dangly toy wrapped around neck & pulling tight so now never leave them alone with anything like that,only allowed to play with them while we are there & a long time ago I posted a thread where one of my boys somehow got both legs trapped down behind a radiator,never heard & never want to hear a scream like it again,when we went in he was hanging head down still trapped & I thought he was dead,actually he had thankfully just passed out & as I was lifting what I thought was a body from the radiator he came round & bit me,for years afterwards we had blankets across the back of the radiator just in case.....
No doubt there will be a lot more near miss stories but because are MC's are so nosey I don't think we will ever cover all eventualities,just keep fingers crossed that your "Maine Coon Angels" are right & will help protect them...x

Ours is with black bin bags

She has gone in one before and something has spooked and she has gone running upstairs bag in tow round her neck

Luckily she now terrified of black bin bags

Blimey, that was a stroke of luck with him popping home, no wonder you're jittery.

We didn't know it was a near miss at the time but whilst our bathroom was being re-furbed the two cats were kept out of the kitchen (bathroom is off the kitchen) to keep them out of the workman's way. Lots of masonry bits floating around and all sorts of paraphernalia in the way of tools and packaging lying around the kitchen. He'd always have a good tidy up when he was finished for the day and then let the cats free to roam round the house.
We got home from an evening out to find Freyja had been sick twice (was clearly not a hairball), and she's not prone to that usually so we were both alarmed. We then found some less savoury stuff on the landing and in the lounge, which is really not like her, and then discovered a very long strip of flimsy plastic (almost like cellotape but not sticky) in amongst the poop and very quickly worked out that Freyja had chewed and swallowed some tape that had been wrapped around a box of tiles that the workman must have missed, and had nearly choked on it whilst gagging whilst we were out. She fortunately (I think) managed to swallow the whole thing and it then must have passed right through. When I realised that she could have choked I was quite upset about it, and we promptly told the workman to leave the cats shut away when he left for the day so we could inspect the kitchen and bathroom prior to them being let out. I'm now hugely paranoid about having workmen in when I'm not here in case the same thing ever happens again. Horrible feeling, knowing that a slight change in circumstance could have resulted in something terrible. I'm grateful - not to mention damn lucky - to get another chance.

Crikey Karen, what a horrible scare that must have been. You've got to be so vigilant with kittens, not to mention lucky. Still, they are quite hardy creatures and it's surprising what they can bounce back from. We were particularaly paranoid about them getting into the washing machine, and on day 1 we wrote on the door in marker pen 'LARRY - CHECK!'

Well, they never got into the washing machine, but we still had a terrifying moment when Larry fell out of a tree at 6 months old. I was in the garden with him watching him like a hawk, and he shinned up this tree in seconds flat, the agile little creature, then found that coming down was much harder. He totally misjudged a branch at 8 or so feet high, and plummeted down to the patio, catching a ceramic plant pot on his way down. It all happened so fast I just froze. I didn't even reach out to catch him or break his fall - I was completely and utterly useless. He landed on his side (not his feet!) I was absolutely horrified, but astonished when Larry just got up and trotted off as if nothing had happened. I had terrible visions of internal bleeding and sudden death overnight, but I couldn't detect a single thing wrong with him. Unbelieveable!!

A friend of mine has a kitten who was found in the house (not allowed outside at that time) with a badly broken leg. She had been out at work and could not detect how on earth it had happened. The kitten must have taken a nasty fall but there was nothing amiss in the house. She has recovered but was not insured so it cost her a fortune at the vet's. Very unlucky! So yes those MC angels were watching over little Lagsy that day!

Sarah got a plastic bag handle stuck around her neck and she went berserk and ran around the house bashng into walls until I could catch her and get it off of her. No plastic bags lying around anymore!!!

Many years ago a burmese that lived here had a cat collar when he was still a kitten and managed to get it caught around his bottom jaw. No one was home all day and we didnt find it until the evening when we got home and although no perm damage was done he was sore and sorry for himelf for quite a while. - No cat collars put on cats ever again!!

We were making the bed one day, my husband pulls the matress up to put the sheets underneath,
The persian got between the slats and the matress once while we were changing bed and we didn't realise, dropped matress back down, heard a funny noise and realised who had crept under there She was OK, just scared

Also the washing machine, I always check where the cats are before I press the go button

Ouchy! My matress is a latex core and even I find it hard to move on my own (I am on the large and robust side ;-) ) - my boys would not like that...
