I need a good carrier to take Simba on short trips to vet and groomer. Can anyone recommend a good one and what size. I have a large round wicker one but it's an awkward shape to carry, he is getting a bit cramped in it and I don't trust the door on it. Thanks.
Hi Karena,if you go into search & put cat carrier into the thread there is quite a lot of posts which hopefully could help your search,also I think there are sites mentioned where you can get them from,I always think whatever type you go for,plastic,wire,canvas etc if it has a top opening it can be to great advantage,none more so than if furry ever has an accident or poorly,its a lot easier getting them in & out through a top opening.
I have wire & canvas,some don't mind whichever they are in another one travels better in the wire one that is smaller than the canvas type,he seems to feel more secure without a lot of space round him,happy hunting....x

We've just invested in two of these 'big boys' and I have to say, the quality is absolutely fantastic. Will be taking our two on holiday to Devon in August and they've plenty of room to allow them a comfy journey to the West Country!

I got the Atlas 30 with the open top option, which I have been very happy with so far. It is certainly big enough for a while, and I think Roxy loves to look outside - she always strolls into the carrier all by herself when I get it out, which can't be a bad thing...:koolkat:

You will need a big blanket or padding for the base, which I got from the same feed shop as I get my chick crumb - I think it's meant for dog beds - which was £15 or so.

It's got a little cushion so there's something soft to lie on, comes with a water/food bowl that clips onto the door and the door can be opened from either side or completely removed. The whole top half can also be removed if you want to turn it into something vaguely approaching a cat bed and to make cleaning it easy.
Should be big enough from him when he's fully grown as well.
I give it 4 hairy paws out of 5.
Think it cost me ~£35 or thereabouts.
For now they all fit in. When the three first came home and their first vets trip it was like they were living in a cave. Now, double the weight and size, it might be harder but still plenty of room. Once they are grown, two will fit ok, but three ? but for short trips to the vet (for the chop... sssh!) it should be ok.

I drove poor Jones all the way from Northumberland down to Tonbridge (280 miles!!!) in the Ferplast carrier, which has plastic sides and if anything I found that he just curled up and snuggled against the side, so wobbling around a little bit didn't bother him!
I would say though that if you're going on the train, the rigidity of the plastic sides might offer a bit of pretection from accidental bumps, or things getting jabbed against the carrier. I don't think there's a big risk of Teddy being thrown inside the carrier either way, I imagine he'll just anchor himself to the floor like Jones did!
Thanks for all your suggestions. I do like the idea of a canvas one as it's easy to fold up and put away when I'm not using it, which will be most of the time. I only need it to take him to the vet now and again or the groomer now.
I have a canvas one (for the same reasons - folds flat, easy to carry over your arm, etc) but I also have two Cargo Cabrios which all three of mine love (you can only fit one cat in each tho - you could get two in the canvas one - assuming your back can take the strain of hefting it up! :rofl:)

I really like the look of the sleepypod but I'm worried that it won't be big enough - they're an expensive purchase if the cats outgrow them. How do yours fit at the moment? I really need to get a new carrier - I've got one the same size as Rachel and Jackie's and it'll easily fit both mc's fully grown. But once they're both in there it's a mare to lift by myself! And when one's in on their own they look swamped.Quote:

Karena, that is exactly the same carrier I've got and it's great - folds down quite flat, strong, sturdy, not too heavy... I just find it gets quite unwieldy once your fur ball's in there as it's quite wide. If you're taller than me it might not be so awkward for you. Every time I take one of mine to the vets, the vet comments on the size of it, and every time I use it I wish it came on wheels! Great for carting both cats around in, and for long journeys as it's got so much room!
