I have always said that the cat chooses you not the other way around :o)
Jo - your house sounds like ours, we shut them out at night but the dog (weimaraner) lets everyone in in the morning and with 5 cats and her and my 4 year old it gets very crowded and usually ends in some sort of punch up!

I turned door handles upside down to stop Buddy opening them - his revenge for being shut out of my bath is to park himself on top of the bathroom door and there is nothing that will coax him down lol. Bet he moves if I try and get into my bed lol
