MC proofing house?

Just wondering what everyone uses to cat proof their homes. Buddy has taken to opening the kitchen cupboards and fridge and helping himself to food. He's taken to opening my desk drawers and kicking everything out (before attempting to squeeze in and curl up). The ironing board keeps collapsing as he has taken to sleeping on that as well. The bathroom, well he's an MC so I won't go on.:rofl: If you shut him out of a room he hangs off the handle until it opens. he has plenty of toys about and there is normally someone in when he does this.

I've thought about child locks but are mcs too clever for them?

From what I've read on here about the breed I think I just have a normal 7 year old 20lb kitten on my hands (legs, lap, head etc).

Wow. Mine are so chilled (!) by comparison. Mine haven't even been on the kitchen counters or the bookshelves (yet).

Perhaps distraction and establishing boundaries are the best cat proofing ? Can't remember, is Buddy the only cat in the house ? Perhaps a playmate ? More self-driven toys ? Erm. I ain't no animal psychologist :)

Hilarious - I love coonies. We have 3 coonies and 2 moggies. Bathroom - the toilet lid is always shut, I have drilled it into the whole house, they are far too interested in water and I dont want to see them paddling in it :o)

The ironing board - I dont iron :rofl: its the only answer.

We havent had the trouble with the kitchen cupboards but they are only a year old so you never know. I would put child locks on any cupboard you deem dangerous, there are different ones, so one that you think will fool a coonie. As for the drawers the same or just give him an empty drawer to play in!

Its our dog that opens all the doors so we have locks on them already so that hasnt been an issue.

Our biggest problem is not getting knocked over when they are steaming around the house, usually first thing in the morning, with three of them you just jump out of the way!

The toilet lid down is a must. Bathroom, well again say no more just expect the cat in the sink, bath, shower. Mine don't try to open the cupboard doors but they will steal off the work surfaces if you leave any meat out. They work as a team to get what they want. Wallpaper with a raised pattern is to be avoided. Our dining room looks like we've started to strip the walls and given up part way through.:stressed:

We agree with all these points!!
Toilet lid down at all time - Raggles & Tilly have both been in there. (they also pinch the toilet roll if it is on the wall and leave the place looking like the andrex puppies have been in there)
Dish washing requires luke warm water, not scalding hot as they like to get in with the dishes.
Whilst bathing / showering, shut all 5 outside bathroom, again some of them will jump in bath or shower with you.
All ornaments removed from shelves and fireplace. Worktops have to be clear as they push things onto the floor.
Wallpaper stripped in most rooms.
Every electrical cable covered in protective sleeve as Pomeroy loves to chew cables.
We have to iron clothes behind closed doors.
Taps covered before we go out as Tilly can turn them on.
As YET they cannot open cupboard doors, BUT they are trying.
We had to change our internal door handles to "ball" type as our previous cat could open stand "lever" handles.

The list goes on.........
BUT we love em to bits

Buddy is the only cat at the moment. I need him to be very settled and secure given his past before I introduce any more cats but I do feel the need for another coonie baby.

I don't mind what Buddy is doing for as long as he doesn't hurt himself, personally I always believed in messy house, messy kids = happy kids and i view my pets as children.

We have put child locks on kitchen cupboards this morning resulting in much digging at the doors. Good trick we have discovered today - my son turned the door handles upside down so you pull them up to open. I felt bad using the bathroom alone

Bathroom is out of bounds, only time hes allowed in is when we're using the loo as he just pushes past us, luckily all of our doors are sliding doors so he's got no chance of opening them!

When we go out he has to put in the bedroom as he just can't be trusted not to climb the tv, charge the windows, stalk the bearded dragon etc etc
