Thread: What made you choose a Maine Coon?

I took the loss of SpencerTheLion hard 2.5 years ago.

He was a ginger-and-white Manx/Persian with white markings around his face....I joked he was a "Manx Coon."

A few months later in a local pound, I found almost the spitting image of him, but about 50% larger and not quite as much of a ham.

He became Spencer II, and eventually became the Boss Cat, filling in a big void.

yes, I also got Neevie for the same reason - lost my 15 years old baby cat, Charlotte, who was a very small cat but I had been told she had everything else maine-coon - she looked like a mini Neevie, she was soooo cuddly and trusting and always with me like a puppy, she trilled like a Maine Coon, she had the tuft on top of her ears, the hairy paws, everything... when she died my hubby and I were just crushed, I am still tearing up writing about her, also 2 and a half years later ...
within a week the void was just unbearable, I wanted someone to fill it - I thought since Charlotte was a Mini Coon there were chances that a Maine Coon would do that - We found Neevie, went to look for her very far because we thought she was just the one....
We are rather crazy about Neevie of course, but of course she is not the same, she is not the same kind of cuddly - Charlotte couldn't bear to not be on my lap whenever I sat down or laid down - if sometimes I sat down while she was asleep in her bed I just had to call her and she would just get up from her bed and take her place on my lap with little trills and a face that said "at last you're here!", Neevie is much wilder and more independant, and even though she is cuddly, it is always in her own terms.... that was hard to accept.

We didn't. He chose us.

It's funny why i have a cat I've never liked cats. One day when i was working in animal's shop some guy visited us with the big cat on his shoulder. I was really surprised! What was that? It was my first question, of course i knew that's a cat but i didn't know which type of cats. After this situation I didn't think a lot about cats. I had saltwater tank and it was my "passion". A few years later, when I found the job, meet my fiancee. She likes cats a lot. She tryed to convince me to buy a cat. I reminded the situation from the animal shop in one minute, when i saw this big cat. After long negotiations we decided. It will be Mane Conn. Right now, we have 2 Maine Coones and one Norwegian Forest Cat

hi Berike, I had a similar thing where my husband didn't like cats very much. We had our firs cat, Charlotte, who was very small even for a normal cat, but she had everything else like a Maine Coon - like, the fluff between the toes, the long tail, tufted ears, and a lot of the temperament, she did the same little trilling sounds. We called her Mini-Coon. We both were crazy about her. When she died at 15 years old we were just devastated and still, 3 years later it is very hard. We decided there and then, that's it, it hurts too much, no more cats. But at work I couldn't help it, I spent my time looking at ads "kitten for sale" and was drawn to the maine coons specifically, because I thought they were like Charlotte only bigger. I saw a picture of a light grey tortie, nearly white, and the caption said "lovely girl, makes kisses to wake you up in the morning, very cudly". I told my husband, he said let's call, the breeder said we should go see her, we went, it was 4 hours away but never mind. I thought she's nearly white, we'll call her Neeve, it's like Nieve which means Snow in Spanish..... In fact when we arrived, she wasn't white. I think the breeder had made a picture of her brother. And we decided there and there she was our baby. Since she was 2 months old only, the breeder said normally we should wait but since she had been raised by hand so as long as we gave her her shots in time she was ours. So we took her, and voila. She's not white, she's not a lovely girl who makes kisses to wake you in the morning, in fact she has a tendency to stomp on your bladder just where she shouldn't. But she's the most delightful Pirate ever, and my heart is full once again.

it's true that cat who has died is still living in our heart. We try to forget about this situation but we can't do that. After long time, when we decide to buy a new pet we fallen in love with it and recognise the previous cat's behavior. Maybe it's ours lovely cat's spirit in new body? maybe...

Last Fri. we had to euthanize our Persian, Sat went to a couple of shelters my wife was draw the this very large 4 year old male. He was so friendly she took him on the spot, he's a perfect fit a week later even with there being a new 15 week old German Shepherd in the mix

It is such a gorgeous cat, with a wilder look than any of those hybrid cats IMO. And a lot of good things is said about its sweet temper. 2 years ago a friend of mine lost her big fat grey domestic cat. It was hard for her, and she was in a very difficult period in her life. She did not plan to replace her "Hippopocat" so soon, but I made her look at different cat breeds, she told me she loved big cats, so of course I showed her the Main Coon... Soon after Spock came in her life. He is the love of her live! For me it was the first MC I met, and he met every expectations I could have concerning that breed, even more. I knew I would have a MC in a near future...

I saw an advert for free, 2 MC's which needed rehoming, couldn't believe she just gave them away the rest is history. I adore Mia and Morris, they're awesome
