    Maine Coon wannabe

Hi all, I think my Lynx has definite MC in her somewhere...the M on her forehead, the incredibly long whiskers, her coat pattern and tail...
She has settled in very quickly (I adopted her 10 days ago when her owner could no longer keep her). She was declawed as a kitten and watching her try to do regular 'cat' things without claws has certainly reinforced my belief that declawing is just wrong.
Have a look at her photo and see what you think...is there an MC trying to get out?

    Hi there,

Coming from a complete novice here, but I think I'm right in saying that the "M" on the cats forehead is common in any breed of tabbies and the maine coon cats that have the "M" on them are tabbies.. But hey you got a fabulous looking cat there, so whatever is hidden in her, I'm sure she'll be a lovely new addition to your family.

Would need to see more (and larger) photos. The M marking is not unique to Maine Coons, despite what many people think. I would look for size/weight, head size/shape, ear size/shape/fur, paw size and whether heavily furred on bottom, tail long and bushy, hair long but actually different lengths at different places on body, and voice (soft).

Here is a link to a page where long time MC breeder Beth Hicks has photographic seminars to help teach breed standards. Probably the best source you will find to understand what a MC is "supposed" to look like. Select one of the seminars (PDFs):
