How do you defurminate your house?

I just spent half of my one-week vacation defurminating our house from omnipresent cat's hair.

I don't like to have strangers in the house to do this work for me, therefore my husband and I do it ourselves. I wish I could have a maid, but I have heard horrible stories about "cleaning" the houses in more than one meaning of this word.

When I read posts about slaves who have multiple Maincoons I always wonder how do they manage to clean their homes
from fur?
Do you have maids? Do you use any special tools or products to make defurminating more efficient?
I want to share with you one product that saves time and efforts. It is PVA sponge which looks hard until it's wet.
I remove the excess of water , sweep the couch or carpet and watch the rolls of fur formed. It covers large surface and cleans hair faster than vaccum cleaner does. I also use it for cleaning of cats tower.

Please share your tricks and experience.

I use a vacuum especially the attachment. The best is the furniture brush attachment.

I live in a house that is naturally dusty anyway - 1920s suburban semi-detached in London; all the "best" qualities - and the cats just add a little extra insulation :P

That said, I use a Dyson DC-23 Pet vacuum which does OK on my particular carpet but not perfect. I vacuum top-to-bottom each weekend (when I can, sometimes the world interferes and it's only every other weekend - horrid, but that's life) and that's typically two hours (the stairs are the longest) and I fill the vacuum either twice or three times. All cat fur. This doesn't include dusting, soft furnishings etc.

In the kitchen, the horrible old small kitchen, it's all about surfaces and cleaning products. Just keep away from the Dettol - in fact dispose of it and any products that go "cloudy" when added to water. And car windscreen wash. It's cat poison.

Ok here goes,I have the miele cat/dog hoover,did have a dyson but with a bad back found it too heavy the other one is really light,until it has a bag of cat fur & litter on board that is... I used to have the sponge but when that gave up the ghost through over use I found that going round the beds etc first with damp kitchen roll & then backing up with the special hoover attatchment works pretty well,the rugs I do with the cats slicker brush,works very well or good old rubber soled shoes will rub the hair up into a neat pile so easy to hoover up plus gives you a good work out at the same time especially if you get a hip swing going as well.Luckily the floors are all wood so easy to hoover round quickly,have gone onto leather sofas that are now a bit {thats if you look in the dark} scratched but easier to clean..... With the five of them I find it easier to do a quick go through daily but then once a week everything gets upended,moved & turned inside out for a good go after which I sit a go into depression when the first cat walks through decides to play & leaves lumps of fur behind everywhere. Oh the joys but wouldn't have it any other way. Trainers are on guess what I am about to start doing,its a nice day so furries are going to be put outside & hopefully I will not need to be depressed for a while,mind you coffee & chockie heps with that doesn't it & of course those furry cuddles & kisses,thats gone full circle, going to have to put up with the fur on the mats.....x

Yes a miele hoover and a pair of rubber soled shoes here too! I wear crocs around the house in the day and as I go from room to room I do the cut fur shuffle and scoot the fur up into a little pile to pick up. I have a sponge thingy that my sil sent me from the States which removes the hair from the upholstery, but this is to be used dry. Hall and kitchen are tiled so that is easy too. But then I only have one big fur ball, I guess Jackie does a lot more cat fur shuffling than I do!

Crocs are great for scooping cat fur into piles :) I hoover when I forget what colour the carpet is; give the sofa a wash when its more ginger than brown ...... other than that if people don't like the fur they are welcome to leave; my cat lives here x

LOL Karen, your take on housekeeping is a lot like mine. Only I walk around the place barefoot - can't stand wearing footwear indoors - and in the evening I pick the fluff from between my toes. If I didn't, my feet would be tufted like the Coonies'.:LOL:

Well, we just hoover the place at least every 2 days, that does the trick and it doesn't take long. We have wooden floors downstairs anyway.
We have 4 cats, so there's bound to be cat hair about, it's no biggie. When we used to have a sofa, it did drive me mad scraping all the fur off it every day, so I was glad to get rid of it. Got a very large piano instead!

Two very good items for removing hair (apart from the hoover of course) are a wet rubber glove and the Amaze brush.

Nobody mentioned maids, thank you. I won't feel like a martyr anymore.
I did try magic brush and sticky roll but they are not powerful enough for the house.
I wish we wore crocs but we like soft slippers, so shuffling is out unfortunately, otherwise we would dance twist in crocs!

We don't have a special pet vacuum; frankly I did not know it existed. Since our vacuum does OK job (we use Oreck), I will buy AMAZE brush and PET HAIR magnet.
They look very promising on Youtube. Our cats do not like leather furniture and don't scratch it neither, but everything else gets their hair tags. Even my husband's chin
if he forgets to shave. It is so funny to see cat's hair sticking out from his cheeks and chin after he gives hugs and kisses to our lovely girls. With Pet hair magnet I will be able to clean his face as well.

Boy never thought about ridding hubby's face pet fur. Let me know how that pet hair magnet works on man scruff.
For our pets (we had a 1/2 MC and a Sheltie) I just used the standard Hoover upright. For furniture, I lift up the Hoover, place it on the cushions, and vacuum away. For the sides of sofa & loveseat, I used their pet comb and actually combed the furniture. I found this to be extremely effective. For the hardwood & tile floors I use a Swiffer. For our clothes, I use sticky tape rollers. Our new 6 month MC hasn't left much fur behind yet. I plan to use the same products, but we'll have to see as he is a purebred MC.

For the stairs I used a good old fashioned stiff handbrush then go over with the hoover attachment, with two playful ones I just hoover the living room everyday and brush the other floors otherwise I have balls of 'tumblefur' rolling around!
The curtains get a weekly wipe down with a damp sponge to get rid of the hair off them otherwise I would have furry linings!
Apart from that we are now buying grey clothes inead of black!!!!!

Tried it on the carpeted stairs today. Cor. I know my cats are the same colour as the carpet but that was all cat hair coming up. Silly amounts of it. It's just a piece of dimpled rubber wrapped around a square plastic pipe, but it works and for £5.49 it's well worth buying if you re also getting those tracks from the same place :)

OK, we tested different products for removing pets hair from the furniture and carpets.

The winner of our trial is a PVA sponge of large size. It is the most efficient and easy to use after you wet it, with long life and no maintenance:

#2 is the Pet Magnet -mostly for clothes
#3 is FurBeGone from Koller-Craft Plastic Products

I was unimpressed with Amaze brush. My husband looked at this product and brought a piece of sand paper from his workshop.
They are the same, except Amaze brush has a handle. Not worth the money, and does not work for the carpets or even furniture.

i vacuum lots!! And use a lint roller on clothes!
