Hi Anne Marie, welcome!
Where I live there are a number of reasons why a kitten is sold without a pedigree. The obvious one being it’s not a pedigree kitty but a cross.
Another possible reason: the breeder is not a member of any cat fanciers’ association (who are responsible for giving out the pedigree papers). Perhaps she never applied for membership, perhaps she was thrown out for breaking the rules.
I think you did well by reporting this woman to the Cats Protection – it’s the least, and probably the only thing, you could have done.
Before we got our first Coonie I had been reading up on “how to choose your kitten” and knew what to look for when visiting a breeder. For instance: if the cats are kept in cages, turn around and walk out.
But I realise this can be awfully, awfully hard. Once you fall for the kitten you’re lost and you will want to rescue it. Sadly, this also keeps BYBs in business.
Anyway, your Toby certainly is a handsome little devil. And the fact he’s not shy or frightened is a very good sign. He’s obviously not too traumatised by his past experience. I look forward to seeing more of him on here.
Take care,
Anna
