Is Your Maine Coon a Lapcat?

My boy is only 4 months old. He already is very solid and heavy, lol he feels like he is at least 10lbs, lol. He is already bigger than Gigi my chihuahua. I have read that maine coon cats are not really lapcats and I was wondering if any of you have cats that are? My cat is definitely a lapcat. He always wants to sit in my lap and he always wants me to pick him up. He sleeps on my chest at night, on my head, or on my back lol. He is always sitting on my shoulder. If I lay on the bed he lays in my arms.

With strangers and others, he will sit next to them and only let them hold him for 5 minutes. He loves people and he hasn't met a person he doesn't love. He is so calm and laid back when meeting strangers and everybody loves him, lol. Are your maine coons the same way with you? I hope this is not something he will grow out of.

hiya. i have 2 maine coons, 14 month old brother and sister (both neutered i might add lol). one is exactly as you have just described, proper cuddly lapcat to the point that you wake up inhaling fluff coz he has to sleep on my face/pillow, and is always sat on someone, his sister however isnt. she is always under my feet, tripping me up on the stairs, sits on the sofa next to me with 1 paw touching all the time, but never sits on my lap and hates being picked up. she doesnt like strangers touching her either. funny how bro and sis from the same litter can be so different. My boy certainly hasnt grown out of it though, and i cant imagine he will any time soon, he adores his cuddles, and often gets under my blanket at night to get that little bit closer hahahahaha xxxxxxx

Unfortunately our two Coonies are no lap cats. Nika sometimes jumps onto my legs when I am laying in my bed. But as soon as I move a little bit, she jumps off. I guess it is due to her blindness, she reacts very sensitive to movements.
Diego is a bit more cuddly, but he doesn't come to my lap either. He loves to be caressed on his neck and sometimes (only when HE wants) he jumps onto my chest, lays down and purrs.
But our domestic cat Lauda is a lap cat. He is sleeping on us at night - either on our back, our legs, the chest. He lays down where he finds a place. The main point is, that he lays ON me or my partner. He also likes to "wash" people with his tongue. I am sure, Lauda was a human being in one of his former lives ;-) He is such a special guy! It seems as if he understands every word we say, and he really really loves people :-))

Hi- my kitten is also nearly 4 months and he is becoming quite a lap cat, too! well... unless he is galloping round the house with my other non MC cats; they really sound like a herd of elephants
He also seems to like sitting behind my head with his paws over my eyes which may be interesting as he gets bigger!! he is our first Maine coon and he really makes us laugh, daily, with his antics! He is developing quite a swagger when he walks which has us in stitches :-))

I'm so jealous of anyone owned by a MC cuddly love bug. My female moggies were aloof, my male moggies were lap cats, and our male half-MC was a total lap cat. So when it came time to get a purebred MC we picked a male. Whiskey our 1 yr old MC is so far from being a cuddly lap cat. He will only come to you when he wants an ear rub. He'll allow you to massage his ears for about 5 minutes, then off he goes. When we went to bed Whiskey used to give us head massages with some acupuncture thrown in (using his kitten needle nails). Now we rarely get those. I'd love to have a cuddle with our MC, but I guess Whiskey feels he's too grown up for that.

All 5 of ours are lap cats to some degree. The retired stud cat, Pomeroy will sit on or near Sandra, but is very fussy about contact with me. The other 4 just love contact with us. Bed time is fun as they all love to sleep on the bed!!
We just hope the new boy Rufus, who joins us in 5 weeks is the same.

This sounds like my boy. He is all alone, but he sounds like a galloping horse all night long, lol. Thanks everyone for answering. I like being about to compare my boy to everyone else.

Mine seem to come in equal measures, have some lap cats & some who require the dignity of sitting beside not on you so with six am quite happy with that, have sat in a chair covered by 20kg plus of fluff & on a hot day it feels as if you are in a sauna....
CatsMom don't fret yet Whiskey has time to become one big luv bug we saw no sign of it from Merlyn until he was over five years old & now you get the purrs, the paw in the face to blow on,the paddles {very rough ones I might add}the luv & most importantly loads of drool with it....where did it all appear from I will never know but its there in bucketfulls now...x
