First Kitten Help

Hello,

I've just registered and this seems to be a good place to get a lot info and tips!

It's my girlfriends birthday at the weekend and we've always wanted a cat. She would love a maine coon cat and we've found a trustworthy seller who has all the docuements and certicficates. We live in a flat/maisonette which is based on a busy road so we wouldn't be able to let him out. Do they make good house cats? I have read they do elsewhere but I would appreciate info from fellow owners.

Also, eventually we would like a ragdoll cat too, do you they'd get along? Are they good with other cat/kittens?

What a super birthday gift & neither of you will ever regret it,they are super housecats & in fact most good breeders insist thats what they are unless of course you are lucky enough to have room for a pen to be built or a safe secure garden they can venture out into as well. Not many MC's wont mix with other breeds of cats or even dogs but if your new babe has been brought up "underfoot" then it will be pretty confident to face whatever it is brought into or asked to accept,I just have a feeling though that no2 could also end up being a MC too,they are just sooooo addictive,or so I am told.....!!!!!

Thanks very much for the reponse. We are super excited to get him and we're going to spoil him!

I'm relived to find out that they can be kept indoors as I'd hate them to roam around this neighborhod as it isn't the safest or quiestest. It mentions on the ad that he's been brought up around children and a dog too so hopefully he's comfortable with other animals.

He looks a super little fellow,any names being thought about yet or are you waiting until he arrives home...?Great that he has been brought up around children & another animal,was he a lone sibling...?
Make sure you have super size cat tray from the start & even though you are only having the one babe at the moment might be good if you have room for a second tray somewhere as you will need it when you have yet another addition {still going to stand by my prediction of it being another MC}anyway.
You both look forward to spoiling him & keeping him safe,I had one cat killed on the road & as I work for a vet I see the down side of RTA's & lost pets too & always said I would never have another cat as I preffered dogs anyway,well a MC came into my life & haven't looked back since,it doesn't take long for them to dig a hole in your heart but do be warned they also know how to play you off against the other half if they don't get their way,have fun & enjoy all of you,is it pick up this weekend too or will he not be old enough...?

No names being thought out yet. I'd really like kooky name or something a bit different. I think i'd like to be with him a little while first before we name him, seems a bit more personal. I think there is another 2 siblings. I'd feel bad taking him away from his mum and dad and brothers though ha.

Oh that's awful in regards to your cat being killed, I think something like that would break my heart! As you work for a vets, how much does it usually cost to get them neutured?
We have to pay a deposit when we go see him this weekend and we get him in 4 weeks :)

My 3 of the same litter were perfectly content as housecats until I got the garden cat-proofed. Now Arnold could take or leave the outdoors, preferring to lie by an open window or door rather than actually go out. Lily loves to be out and Jock loves to come and go. They don't get particularly stressed if I keep them in when the weather is vile and if I open the door for them when it's raining they look at me as if I have gone nuts. I think it's probably key to have a number of vantage points for them to watch the world fly by and to be kept active indoors.

They take quite well to a harness too so walking is possible whilst keeping them safe.

Casco seems perfectly happy being an indoor cat. He doesn’t show an interest in going outside at all, which has surprised me recently as he is nearly 7 months and not neutered yet. Hope I haven’t tempted fate here!

Enjoy your visit to him & perhaps a name will come to mind when you see him,my last four babes we have given names too quite early so by the time they have come home they are already answering to them. Do you know what although I work at a vets I am not sure what the cost is I am normally on the helping to do the op end rather than the money but will find out for you,prices do vary from place to place though. Don't feel guilty about taking him away from his siblings {unless of course you already going for the two...!!}you will more than make up for his loss by being there for & with him,four weeks will soon go,there has been quite a few people on countdown on the forum just recently.

I think my boys were around £40 each to get snipped. The little girl was a bit more. You can sometimes get Cat Protection League vouchers to help with the cost or you may be entitled to a discount through Blue Cross, PDSA etc if you are in receipt of benefits.

Awww - what a gorgeous lad! Your lives will be changed forever - being owned by a Maine Coon is brilliant and you won't regret it :smile:. My 3 big babies now have an enclosed run but before that they were house cats and they were fine with that. I would recommend having as many high level perches as you can create - they adore being up high. I have 2 cat trees that go up to the ceiling and the top spots are the favourites. I was just over £59 to have Max castrated and microchipped at the same time. I think microchipping is always a good move even for house cats just in case the worst happens and they get out. Very wise decision to keep him indoors. He'll be fine as long as he has enough toys, a cat tree or two for climbing, and... a furry playmate. :)

Do you have some kind of outside space such as a balcony? Then you can secure it with mesh or netting so he can get a bit of fresh air and do some bird watching.

Aww he is gorgeous. I am also a new mc owner (not first time cat owner) so far I've noted how more playful they are so plenty toys to keep him entertained. They love them feather sticks. I recommend zooplus for random toys

The 4 weeks wait will seem never-ending ... I wonder whether your girlfriend may be a very lucky girl and have 2 kittens for her birthday .... perhaps you wouldn't feel quite so bad about taking him away from his siblings if he had company ....

Awwwwwe, my heart just skipped a beat! I've always wanted one this color! Congrats on this precious furbaby! Be sure to get a toy basket too! Kota still loves his toy basket, and he'll be six next month! It is so funny to watch him rummage through the toys until he finds the perfect one! We are so happy for you and your new addition to the family (we'll see if you can stop at one)!
