Collecting my first Maine Coon a week today!

As the title suggests, I've put a deposit down on my first ever Maine Coon, in fact my first pedigree cat, and I'm collecting him in a week :smile:

I haven't decided on a pet name yet.

I've owned moggies for over 10 years so I have most bits and pieces but obviously not in MC size! What size of carrier do people recommend, that will still fit when he's fully grown.

I only have a couple of photos that I took on the viewing when he was about 11 weeks old but will add more once he arrives:

The other thing I'd like some advice on is the best way to protect the front door from accidental escapes? I'm considering a baby gate or some netting tacked up just to make it something that he needs to think about rather than being able to run straight outside and to give me time to catch him. I live directly on a road with a very small front garden so want to be safe rather than sorry.

Regarding the front door, do you have a porch, so that there are 2 doors to open onto the road. My breeder had a porch built for that very reason - there are 2 doors, and one is always shut.

If this is not realistic, you will have to be very, very careful not to let him out the front door. Is it possible to use the back door instead? If you can fit a baby gate across your hallway then this might work. Until he's big enough to jump over it!

One of our carriers is a soft crate & it's brilliant as it folds away,sorry don't know the size in cm's but if you can convert ours is 24" x 16" x 16" & it has a 10kg cat in it with space still to spare.
If you have a door that goes straight out onto a road can you have a mesh frame door made up to go over the outside so you can answer the door without worrying, a friend not only had that type of frame fixed over her outside door she also had one made up for inside so she could keep the cats out of the kitchen & in the other part of the house,have you somewhere where you could perhaps do the same, I think he will walk straight through the bars on a baby gate.....
Also make sure you have "big"size cat tray you will need it,kitten size doesn't come into it when you have a MC,good luck keep us updated.....x

What an adorable little guy. Congrats! We've had two carriers for Buzz and Baxter. They like to ride in the car (in the same crate) so they travel together in a soft sided dog crate. It is great for the car but it is already too heavy for me to carry and they are only 9 months old. If I had one cat I would look into the Extra larger Sherpa with wheels (available on Amazon) for short trips. Have fun with your new kitten.

What a gorgeous kitten! We've got a large PetGear carrier for our cat from Amazon. It fits him fine now (he's 14 mos) but if he grows much more we'll have to get a bigger one. I'd say if you can get one with wheels, go for it. MC's can get very heavy, very fast!

Four days to go! I bought a baby play pen/ fire guard on eBay today to put round the front door to create an internal porch area. Works really well. Obviously he'll be able to jump over it but it'll give me a little bit more peace of mind when opening the front door.

I'm still looking for the perfect carrier. I am tempted by the pushchair type - although I remember my reaction when I first saw someone with one! For the time being, he'll fit in my normal cat sized one so will give me a while to look around.

Can't wait.
