Please settle an argument ! lol

Ok Sarah and I have been having a difference of opinion !! Mother and daughter thing you know what it is like ! lol Sarah is of the opinion that MC's weigh in around 10 - 18 pounds (male) however, I on the other hand (having seen one at a show) disagree, the one I saw was 30 lbs if he was an ounce and filled two cat cages, he was like a lion cub with a mane !!!! lol He was stunning unfortunately it was a judges cat and when I asked who bred him she said she couldnt tell me ! Dont know why ! Dylans dad weighs in at around that weight, so is this not the norm or am I right and my beautiful daughter is halfing my maine coons weight !!! lol

Go tell me how much your MC's weigh, and I can put my lovely daughter right !!! lmao

I hear what they are saying for sure !.......................but !!! lol the ones I have seen (excluding dylans mum ) have been well over 25lbs !!! lol Oh come on you are supposed to be on my side !!!! lol I watched that video at the end of the link you posted, that is one long cat by the way !!! lol I know that the females are smaller or lighter than the males and to be honest I would expect that. But Donna please help me out here Sarah cant be right you dont understand !!! lol, Jack (Sarahs moggie) is 14 lbs !!! lol and not a bit of fat on him, he is so athletic, seriously.

Though far from an expert I agree with Donnad. At least from what I've read. I did see an blurb on line about the largest domestic cat according to the Guinness Book Of World Records. 48 1/2" long nose to tip of tail. Forgot the weight but remembered is was signifi(cat).

My cat Buster weighed 28 pounds , he was a great big lover boy. He passed 2 years ago and I miss him everyday! He was the cat that said mit! hahaha such and funny fellow, my catdog!

. . . and that would be "Stewie" or Mymains Stewart Gilligan, a beautiful silver MC from Reno, NV! Sadly he passed from cancer in March of this year. Not certain of his weight, but it was under 30 lbs. Our own MC male Dakota, is 19 lbs. If interested, you can find more info on Stewie by googling or checking out his fb page. He was quite the ambassador for felines everywhere and will be greatly missed! A fine MC specimen if there ever was one - RIP Stewie.

I saw a retired show cat that had won some pretty nice titles that was 27 pounds at 6 years old, and not in any way fat. Also the male that we hope will be the father of our 2 Maine Coon kittens (we've been told by the breeder he's getting anxious, so hopefully it happens soon) was 22 pounds at 9 months, not sure of his weight now at over 1 year, also no fat. Also saw some females that were 18 pounds I think, and they weren't fat either; they were huge compared to the other females I've seen.

That is definately one big cat for sure My Teddy would well be put in his place !!! lol Mind you he is the epitomy of the gentle giant ! lol

Your Dakota (love the name) is certainly no small cat either what age is he ? See all the weights so far are over the average, thats nice to know.

brims you have cheered me up no end, my debate with Sarah is being held up with news of all these MC's over the 'average' weight!!! lol And OMG 22 lbs at 9 months that is a big cat ! I hope your impending motherhood with two MC kittens happens soon, fingers crossed for you.

Thanks for posting brims its good to know all about those MC's out there that are thriving, fit and healthy at higher weights and look forward to seeing pictures of your babies when you get them.

Donna thank you for posting a picture of Buster, he is just simply gorgeous, I am so sorry for your loss and I am going to say something that I usually hate people saying to me when I lose a treasured friend, he was a good age wasn't he 18 years old, and 18 years of wonderful memories xx

I cried a bit when he passed, but I had known in my heart he had a great long life, he was never cold, hungry or scared. I buried him in the backyard in a sunny spot where the birdies play. He was loved and cherished his entire life. I wish we could say that say for all. I know somewhere he is waiting for me, to rub his tummy and give him cuddles.

I am sure Donna that he was a very happy cat knowing he was loved and cared for all his life and that is something you should be proud of and I agree you will meet again and his cuddles will be felt again x

Thx Chris! Dakota was 19 lbs last time I weighed him, and he is now 6 years old. He really is a wiggle-worm, so we don't weigh him very often - though he seems to be filling out more now. Maybe we'll weigh him this week-end and post the results. As for length, I don't think we will EVER get that number :rofl:

The loss of Stewie was devastating to his owner, but she continues on with his legacy and is active with the local humane/cat rescue groups!:smile:

As I've said elsewhere, our Oscar weighed in at 11.5kg in January at the vet's here - that's a hair over 25lbs.
We think he's grown a bit since then, but he must stop soon, surely?

Shimba weighs in at 10.70kg & hopefully as he is coming up to 6 that is it,plenty heavy enough when he curls up on your lap & far too heavy for me to be able to hold him out at shows anymore bless him so won't let him see that you are well beating him Oscar,don't envy your parents when you choose to step on them.....x

It's tricky actually conveying Oscar's size via a photo and I'll get Mrs Django to take a photo of me holding him. I'm six feet tall and not scrawny, so that might give some indication.
Meanwhile, here he is just now looking a tad watchful...

Wow! What a handsome lad, he looks like he is proportioned perfectly, not too heavy. I would like to see him next to a regular house cat just for sizing! It does look like he smells something out there, great eyes and noses make good hunters!

We just took our boy for a check up at the vets. She said he wasn't overweight at all, but shouldn't get any heavier (6kg/ 13lbs) and gave a long lecture about measuring out food. I said that I heard that MC's were slow growers and took up to four years to fully develop. She scoffed at that and insisted that no cat grows after its first year, and that at 15 mos if there was any growth it would just be a bit of muscle.

What can I say, every where I have read about MC's on here on breeders sites and in general they all say that they take 4 - 5 years to reach their maturity. Does your vet have dealings with any other MC's apart from your own ! I once had a vet who said that my Great Dane should only be fed the same amount as any other dog and once a day. Needless to say he didnt stay my vet for very long after that !!! lol In his defence, if there is one, he had never had a great dane on his books, this though, in my opinion, is no excuse. Giant breeds do not fall into the general catagory.

I have a friend who breeds Irish Wolfhounds and an oncall vet, not from her practice, took one of her birthing mothers in to section her, overdosed her and killed the five pups she was carrying ! All dogs are not the same, and I would imagine all cats are not the same either, thats only my opinion though !

I think I would like my vet to look up the breed before making such statements.

Find a new vet. 13 pounds would be on the lighter end of the male Maine Coon scale. What's true for a Munchkin cat is not true for a Maine Coon, so if the vet has no large breed knowledge, they need to be ditched. The male that we hope to father the kittens we're going to get, eventually, was about 12 pounds at 4 months when we saw him at his first show.

I have one boy who doesn't weigh much more than that & he is full adult but I agree that a vet who thinks "all cats" don't grow after a year should as suggested look into MC's as a breed,Welly put a final spurt on between 4 & 5 yrs old which confused me as all the others evened out at about 4,I am sure he grew overnight like they appear to do when younger,even had to get hubby to confirm my thoughts,his whole face had changed & he had gone up another full kg.......
MC's are a full new learning curve & the vets where I work now class themselves as "experts" on the breed,we have all learnt together about them & are still learning....xxxxx

I do like the idea of my baby still allowed to grow a bit - she's a tall cat, for a cat, but for a MC I think she's a bit on the smallish side. At the moment she doesn't eat very well, so she's oscillating between 5,5kg and 6kg at 2 and a half years old...
She used to eat and eat and eat - everything we put in her plate would just disapear in a flash and I could feed her up to 6 pouches and a bit of chicken and salmon per day (never forget the chicken!) now she has 2 halves of pouches, 2 handfuls of special MC dry food in her food maze, and sometimes about 100g of chicken... so - bottom line is she doesn't eat a lot any more, but she's not skinny by any means. But she doesn't seem to grow any more either. May be later.... :-)

Thanks for all of your input. I know two unrelated people that left this practice out of dissatisfaction, so I think I'll follow suit.
