Weight
A topic that keeps appearing on the forum is weight.. I think it's become a kind of obsession with me, and I've been trying to work out why. I've come to the conclusion that because he is a MC everyone asks how old is he and how much does he weigh in the same breath. I think it was Karena that said something about her boys having an expectation of how big the cat will grow, becuase they are a large breed.
I understand that weighing of a new born kitten to chart his/her progress is necessary but it's not something I've ever done before with kittens once they are passed a certain stage if they appear healthy. I'm interested in everyone elses take on this subject ?

I don't know. I've found the same... I've never been interested in the weight of a kitten before but then I've never bought a pedigree kitten before.
I guess this is how the breeder is keeping me up to date with how gryfn is growing so I'm sharing...and I guess I want to know how big he is growing for things like worming, etc.

Its handy to know for wormer pills I dont like useing droplet types, but I think they all grow at different rates anyway, its just an indication they are going in the right directon. We did'nt weigh our last MC unless he was at the vets. I would be worried however after past experience that the kitten or cat weighed alot but did'nt seem healthy

I think it is mistakenly used as a guideline to "quality" as a kitten grows into an adult. In the show world, size is very important & weight is sort of a guideline to some people in that respect...

Re:Weight
I don't think weight is the most important thing although with a MC it seems to be expected. How big is the average MC ? A lot depends on the breeding lines & at the end of the day we are looking for good breeders who do the best by their breeding lines & produce loving healthy babies. When I collected my red & white boy the breeder said he wouldn't be heavy because of his breeding line but he is a very tall long bodied boy who has never weighed over 7kg & he is now 8yrs old but when he walks in the room he makes his presence felt, but the at the other end of the scale I have 9kg & 10kg boys, one two yrs & the other 6yrs both from another breeder but her original breeding queens came from where I got my first boy. I don't really think overall size does always come into showing,it may help but if a smaller cat has got more better points for the breed I know we have very often stood on the sidelines & commented on the fact that it proves "Size doesn't always count....!" Holding a 9kg plus cat out for judging is no joke so now hubby is taking my boy out for me & I have taken on his boy who is brother to mine but weighs in at only 7kg,bliss but he is also doing pretty well bless him.
