Okay, so after intense consideration and taking everything all you amazing guy have had to say, as well as further googling we have decided to keep the kitten.
Ripley comes down to eat eventually, but not usually until later in the afternoon rather than in the morning. She spent a little time in the living room today when the kitten was asleep and then ran back up stairs, but it was longer than she had been in here.
It is just our lack of experience in having more than 1 cat at a time which is making us feel like we are being horrible to Ripley. But as I have said before it is reassuring to know that it isn't Ripley just being "Ripley" it's a very common thing. So we have made the desicion to keep the kitten and give it the proper chance it deserves, especially since the kitten really has made her self at home and is obviously comfortable here. The food bowls are already very seperate to the fact that Ripley wouldn't have to see or walk past kitten to get to her food.
All you're opinions and advice has been invaluable guys, while I still feel sorry for Ripley as I miss her running up to us when we walk in the door or her meowing constantly when we are making her food I'm sure she will come round eventually. She's just being the true meaning of a scaredy cat hehe.
Here is a photo of her on the stairs, observing what's in the living room...

Awww cute pic of Ripley. I really wouldn't be worried about it, as long as Ripley hasn't attacked the little munchkin it will work out in the end. If it was me I would be waiving a nice shoelace in front of her when she is on the stairs and hopefully she will be distracted with this and come in to the lounge without thinking about the kitten. It's just going to take time is all

Thanks AFK,
Yeah we have been playing with string with her, when she's at the top of the stairs she plays with it, and the balls of paper (he two fave 'toys') but gets too wary and curious further down the stairs. I think if she was being off with us all the time it would be worse, but as it is when we see ripley and she's at the top of the stairs or in our bedroom she's purring, all around us as normal.

Congratulations on your little girl! I hope it's working out a little better now.
I felt incredibly guilty at making our resident cat uncomfortable, but he's pretty much back to normal now. There were a couple weeks of dilated eyes and slow movements, but the new girl's proven she's not going to maul him so he's relaxed. If they can get to the stage where they can play together and enjoy each other's company, the tension they're experiencing now will be soon forgotten. Oliver got to the point where he started cleaning her last week, which melted my heart. (Don't mean to hijack the thread, sorry!)

hey see RaySen! there's hope!
Inexcelsis your furries are absolutely gorgeous! they seem "civil" and relaxed at least, even if they're not yet in the best of terms.... :-)

Ha awwww told you it was going to be ok
It would take Ripley a while to gain a bit of courage as she has this whorl wind of a new little firball intruding on her life!! But when she realised that the kitten isn't going to eat her, chase her etc she has obviously thought bah the kitty is alllll good hehe.

Ahh thanks you guys, you really did help with your advice. I'm so so glad that we made the decision to stick with it and keep her.
Now they constantly chance each other day and night, sometimes Ripley can forget (I think) that she is so much bigger and pins Newt (kitties New name) down and bites a bit as Newt let's out a more of a squeak than a meow but they always make up. Today we even saw Ripley licking the top of Newt's head!
Am proud of my little Ripper for getting back to normal so quickly and of Newt for not being phased by any of it!
