i need some inspiration and ideas

at the moment i have 2 ragdolls and a ragdoll/british short hair cross (son of one of the ragdolls) which are all male indoor cats. in a month i am getting a maine coon to add to the family. the problem i have is that i want to give them the loft as a play room from time to time. the cats love it up there but as the hatch is approximately 9 feet from the floor, getting back down is always an issue which is usually resolved by either tricking them into a bag and lifting them down or grabbing them if i can get them within reach. what i want to do now is build or buy something that will allow them to come down on their own by climbing or jumping down but it has to be easily removed and stored with minimal space although possibly in the loft. i really need something big and strong enough to allow a fully grown maine coon to use as that will be the biggest and heaviest cat.

i am thinking something made of wood with carpet nailed to it so they can use their claws to steady themselves but i am looking for suggestions

Could you not purchase a telescopic loft ladder? It's the simplist thing I can think of. That way it's light and sturdy, can be stored in the loft, and you can still cover the steps with carpet. You don't have to get one that is designed for vertical use. There are some models that are designed to be used at 45D angle so it's more like using stairs.
