Jumping?

Just out of interest how high can your kittens jump?

Louie is going to be 6 months old soon & I hevent seen him jump onto a highish surface yet which is good for us but Im just wondering why. He used to climb the curtains :grr: grown out of that hobby thank god :LOL: but if he gets onto anything he goes up in stages.

So he has'nt visited the kitchen sink yet or the other work surfaces in the kitchen, our old MC used to have to be removed several times if say I was makeing a coffee or sandwich this made the whole procedure take 3 or 4 times as long & when cooking anything he would be draped round my neck :eek:

I have also noticed when he sits down his left rear leg although pointing forwards is out as if he is leaning more on his right leg may just be him he walks & runs fine :smile:

Simba hasn't jumped up very high yet - he does still climb the curtains though and this morning I came down to find one of the curtains in the front room half off the rails! He isn't a light weight now and I worry the curtain rail won't hold his weight for much longer! If you are worried about his leg I would get it checked by the vet.

Mmmmmmmm I know :sad2: the vet did give him a good going over when we registerd him including his hips, he's certainly not in any pain. he still looks a little like a seesaw (backend higher than the front) so it may just be the growing stages, I have to take Pepsi in for her dental check so may take him along for the ride :LOL:

Probably just growing - Simba's back end looks to big for his front end at the moment and his hind legs look like an Alsation's back end - almost like they are too big for him to walk on:LOL: I'm presuming he will even out eventually.

Harry doesn't jump either, he will climb up on things a bit like a military mission, one stage at a time. I haven't given it much thought because I assumed it was because of his build .Like Simba, he does climb the curtains but really now only if he's on the settee and can't see outside so swings on the curtains to get our attention. He's getting to big to start from the bottom !

:LOL: I think we can all enjoy the lack of huge paws landing on top of units & tv for a while longer then :rofl:

I have not found most MCs to be big jumpers. Our most frequent and best jumper is our smallest girl, Allie (12lbs). All of our four do go up on the main kitchen counters (~3ft high), though they also have a kiddie table as a step up, and they use this more than jumping right up. We did have one male that was incredibly athletic and learned to jump on counters and railings very young (so young he would also fall off). He would jump over you at the front door while bending to unhook a dog. I think around the second time he got outside he went 15-20ft up a tree and out on a branch. Did not seem to know how to get down, so I went to get an extension ladder. As I was approaching with the ladder, he decided to get down the most direct way: he simply jumped. We were horrified, but totally uninjured and unfazed, off he then went with us continuing to give chase! Unfortunately, he died at 2, but he was one incredibly physical cat.

Glad none of ours have wanted to climb the curtains!

As for the appearance of the rear feet while growing...they definitely look way too large for their size until they get older. Our 9mos old male no longer looks like a bunny, but the rear feet are still too long looking (they are as long as the 1 1/2yr old male who is overall bigger). They do grow into them. Our boys in particular have often liked to sit with one rear leg kind of sticking out to the side. If that is what you mean, I don't think it is too unusual.

You just reminded me how bad Milo was at errrrrrrrrm landing :LOL: Simba used to play a game of get round the room without touching the floor & im sure it was to show uo the pedigree cat :rofl: Simba would jump & land lightly onto most things including the top of doors & you just knew Milo was doing it as you could hear a right comotion of claws & then thud :LOL:

Winston can jump onto the kitchen table which is about 3ft high.
I'm dreading when he can manage the kitchen benches :LOL:

He also likes to launch himself onto the t.v unit, and from there propels himself onto the book shelves. Will try and post some photos!

luckily I don't have any curtain climbers....

Gryfn has jumped onto the bar stools, but that's all. Usually he finds alternative routes to things up high.

& have been watching him closely he walks & runs fine so I think just him slouching :LOL: he also came flying in & jumped on the table whih is nearly 3ft so not going to loose any more sleep over him :smile:

He looks as if he is sitting comfortably & if he can run about like that I wouldn't think he has a problem.I have one who sits with his front leg at a funny angle,from the joint down to his foot it looks as if it is bent & goes right round to the side,nearly as if he is double jointed but has no problem with it. As I work at the vets I took him up for a quick xray but everything was ok,visitors just say rude things about the poor boy when they come & see him sitting like that,they reckon he should have a handbag on his arm,he is the most precious & gentlest one of them all so perhaps that is why...
I wonder if this is another one of the MC's different traits...

:rofl: I dont think I'l get Louie a hand bag he'l just hit the dogs with it :LOL: OH did think that maybe his other back leg is shorter at the moment & thats why, I definately dont think its his hip so will see how he grows in the next few weeks.

Eddie is 2 years old i just measured Ground to the window is 5 foot 2 ,
from watching him jump its a calculated jump , as he only has 1 foot opening to land into ,

Well thats it the harmony is over he just jumped from a sitting position onto the tv unit which is just under 4ft :LOL: only trouble is the tv wobling with it being a skinney one which we got after loosing Milo as he always used to lounge across the top of the old one so it was never safe to replace it, so the next job is to Louie proof the tv :LOL:

Dexter is pretty adverturous and is climbing as high as he can get (our tallboy in the bedroom is his highest climb, about 41/2 feet, he uses the chair next to it first though!) Chilli is now trying to copy him but is not so confident, Dexter likes to leap off high things to ambush Chilli, which probably explains why he had sore legs for a couple of days and worried us all sick. Dexter is a bit smalller than Chilli, who always seems to be eating (he's not to fat tho, just looks bigger and more heavy boned, even tho they are brothers). Neither of them are curtain climbers, but they are very good at people climbing, I fear we may all now be scared for life! Luv Lisa xxx

I'm not sure how to cat proof a house , Eddie is always looking up , and looking for ways to get there ,

I'm glad Louie is back to normal now ,
first week with Eddie now and i find myself thinking OH no why is he doing this / that , then i have to just say its just a cats way of doing things . he likes to get to the highest point he can get to ,,

Sadly our two have discovered the delights of the curtains, they started off with the sofa throws and worked their way up!!

Also they like to climb up daddy's legs too, not too bad when he has his work trousers on put PJ bottoms are a different matter. Thankfully they respond to the killer death stare from me and are leaving my legs alone so far...................

I must of been lucky when i got Eddie , he hasn't shown any bad habits yet , he jumped on the counters the first day but i strung pop cans ( OK a few beer cans also ) together with string and put a stone in each one , and placed them along the edge of the counter for a few days , after a few times with the cans crashing down around him he decided he dint like the counters any more , so after 4 days i took the cans down and put them away and he hasn't been on them yet since ,
He is very mindful of his claws also so not to scratch me ,, very good for a stray cat , i think he just lost his way , and ended up in the shelter

Thats a good idea mdel747 :nod: as Louie has now discoverd he can jump he is all over the place he has a new game of get round the house without touching the floor :rofl:

I think they only realy stick their pins in when younger our old MC never realy got his out even if Holly got a bit to boisterous with him manybe thats why they are the Gentle Giants of the cat world :LOL:

It really kind of funny , i have yet to find something he dose that is bad , i move his litter box and put him in it and he just remembers where it is , so I'm getting closer for the potty training as he is in the same room with it , he is already scratching in the toilet box just not using it yet .
I might just spoil this guy yet .
He did jump to the counter again today , cans come out again little reminder
