Does Lilly sound like a Maine Coon?
In January, I was at a boat show with my family. A local shelter was there, and in one of the cages was the cutest kitten anyone could have ever imagined. So, of course, I got her. The shelter said she was a domestic long hair (dlh), and I had no reason to doubt them. I had never heard of a Maine Coon. When I brought the kitten home, one of my neighbors said "That's a Maine Coon if I ever saw one!"
So the research began.
Lilly, my kitten, was said to have been brought to the shelter on September 23rd of last year, but when I took her to the vet, he argued with the date. Her teeth showed him that she would have been born only fourteen weeks before our appointment--so roughly in late October. I selected October 26th to be her unofficial birthday.
So, we'll say she's about 8 months old. Again, no way for me to really know. And maybe the vet was wrong and she was brought in September 23rd, so she'd be about 9 months old.
As I've read, Lilly has all the characteristics of a Maine Coon--a poofy, squirrel-like tail; long hair all over her body; hair coming out her ears in a lynx-like fashion; long hair between her toes; wide, bright eyes; and before summer, she had a thick 'collar' of hair around her neck, making her look like a little lion. She's also super affectionate, really really smart, and she doesn't meow--she makes little clicking noises, and squeaks. We keep joking that she's not a cat at all, but really some kind of squirrel.
However, I've also read that Maine Coons get fairly large. And I know the males get larger than the females--but Lilly, at 8-9ish months old, is only 5 pounds. Is this normal?
I'm not overly concerned with it, I was just curious. I've looked online, but most of what I've found is tracking the males, because they are the big guys.
Thanks for any help :)
P.S. I'm attaching some pictures for everyone to see--She's also my profile picture.
