Cat names

Just wondering, as there are lots of great cat names around this forum, how did you come to choose your cat's name? It can be quite difficult deciding on a name which everyone likes, and which fits in with your other pets' names.

We find that whatever the official name is, it soon morphs into something else entirely.
For example, at the moment, Larry is always called Laggs; Monty gets called Mozz, or Norm; Barney gets called Bosis and Humphrey gets called Little Humphreyton or The Killer.

Sometimes the nicknames get so daft, we daren't repeat them to anyone outside the house! :LOL:

Some of the names mine get called I wouldn't want anyone else to hear but it is normally because they have wound me up to the point where foghorn Lil takes over & the language needs to be censored..... but normally China Blue is called China or occasionally Chin Chins, Pansy never had a pedigree name or papers as being very flat chested she was not expected to be here too long but she is known as Pansy Potter,Robert the Bruce takes the last part of his name & it never changes other than when he has one of his moods on & then its Brucie because you seem to be able to get a bit more depth into your voice,Magicol Merlyn is Merl,Shimba Mara is Shims & Wellynton Boots plain old Welly,daughters two are Crystal & she becomes Crissie & the only one who really takes on a bit different name is Ozzy Valentino,will answer to Oz but really knows who you are talking too if you say Odd Bod so pretty boring really aren't we !

Hector is also known as Hectorsnorus as I have never heard a cat snore quite like he does or chainsaw puss due to his loud purr and Roxy is know as snugglepuss as she loves to snuggle up on me.

Louie gets that dam cat at the mo :rofl: Simba gets skinny as he looks though he is never fed but is fine since haveing his thyroids removed. Scutter cant repeat on here & Casper - Ghost cat as he very rarely comes out till the lights have gone off :LOL:

The dogs have a lot more names though :shy:

It's always fun choosing the name of your new kitten/cat. We've done it just by looking at them, holding them and seeing 'what' they look like. My BF said immediately after seeing the MC kitten at 2 weeks, "Oh, he looks like a Chester!' - and no matter what other names we came up with, we always went back to that.

Chester can often be referred to as many names: Chessypie, Master Chester, Chesterpeak, Chessy, etc.... It's funny how we give them affectionate terms and nicknames like we do our closest companions/family/partners!

Yeah we do the same, give them nicknames I mean, Harry also answers to Haribo, Har, and my stepson calls him Harrison ? no I can't work that one out either ;)

I know what you mean ' Kenzo' now answers to Kenno/Kenner/Big furro boy, oh all sorts, doesn't seem to mind though as long as he gets fed and cuddled!!! :LOL:

Gryfn's pedigree name is Optimus Prime... but I wanted something different for his everyday name... dh and the kids sometimes call him Griff.

Charlie Brown is usuall charlie, but the kids sometimes call him Mr Brown... I sometimes call him some very impolite names when he's being mental... :rofl:

Simba's name was chosen by my kids but he very rarely get's called that. When I'm calling him it's usually pus pus or kitty kitty or big boy and those are what he comes running too. I think the dogs think their name is NO:LOL:

The name of my boy on the pedigree - Moulin Rouge. And at home we call him simply Rysch. :smile:

The name Tiki just sort of popped into my head, but I wanted something that fit our life style as well as the cat.

I love coming up with names, and had a huge list but of course the last one I came to, was it!

Naming pets is always fun! I generally tend towards the more unusual names where I can (often after characters from books). I've got a couple of ideas of what to name my future MC, but it will depend on what suits them!

However, in case you are interested my ratses names are as follows (with what they actually think they are called in brackets afterwards): Taryn (Tazzy-poo-mouse), Flavia Albia (Albia or Al), Thalia Sophrona (Talli) and Sosia Camillina (Sosy, Sosy-nose or Fluff Monkey).

We have two Ragdolls, Rags official name is Ragland Alamo Gant S-squire, although we call him Rags, sometimes its Ragamuffin. Wendy is sometimes called Wendy Lou or Wendy girl.
We get our first MC kitten on August 2nd. He is currently named Moose by the breeder and try as we may, have not come up with anything better. So, unless it changes before then, he will be Moose.

Moose is a great name! I once knew a beautiful border collie called Moose, and he was great! It's quirky and original, and I'm sure it will suit your new babe xxx

I live in an old victorian townhouse and the earliest owners on the deeds were a baron and baroness (why they lived in a townhouse in Surrey is a mystery but there you go). I found a photo online of my house from 1915 and there's a woman leaning on the front garden gate that we assume is the baroness. Her maiden name was Romaine Stone, so that became the latter part of the pedigree name. I like to name things after gods, angels or fallen angels (even my cars are named that way) and had a long list of potential first names but after I saw Freyja at the breeders for the first time, I decided on Freyja. So she's named after the Norse Goddess of War, Love and Beauty (even more appropriate now she's home!) and a Victorian Baroness.
However, she is frequently called Shadow, Duster, Baggypants, Freyja-poo, PsychoKitty and Hatter, depending on just how crazy she's being at any given moment!

Darcy came with her name. But we call her Squatch short for Sasquatch because she's SO much bigger then my other kitties

Always liked the name Oscar for a boy cat, so it was easy deciding his name, some times we affectionately call him Ozzy cat,his pedigree name is Mistyfoot, which we choose out of the breeders daughters serious of novels she is currently reading. (cant remember what they are called now!)

Murphy - was already named like that as we got him from a rescue organisation
Destiny - I wanted a name with a specific meaning like that. I had several that I tried on her. As I called her Destiny for the first time she meowed - so I named her Destiny :)
Joycee - I wanted to give her a name that has joy in it - here it is :)

We just got another Maine Coon last night. His name, is Parker..... ;-)

Eric was called that because OH is a manu fan and ...eric cantona ...and ernie ...well we are of that age ! Absolutley nothing to with their pedigree names

I have a lot of names, and I like funny names with a lot off humor.... so I named a kitten Nosmo King... Knows Nothing .. Irresitible Bitch, Nick Name.
Jillz so exciting ..after a apple cider, Just my luck ( because I want a black girl and she is blue ) :-)
And so I have a lot of diffrent names.

I have coons with special name's for a special coon....One of my first coonbreeds whas Ben Hur after the movie...Ben is a surviver also the character Ben Hur in the movie.
Heaven can wait...all her brothers and sisters died on a very bad longillness...but she struggled and survive :-)

Unsolved Riddle , Unchained Melody, Union Jack, Naughty Nikita, Little Joe, Kinky Kitara, I saw Paris burning...All names from my breeds ore my cat...and so a lot more.

Buddy was named via thread on here (MickB actually named him!), Millie got named as only one letter diff from her previos friendly name, Storm got his name as Tornado was too much of a mouthful. Woops, I haven't agreed to have that kitten. ... yet :)

Poif (Pwuf) was named after a word I made up when I was about 3 yrs old, which meant 'fluffy things'. It was a descriptive word. I felt that it was the perfect word to describe an MC and so poor Poif has been named so.

Ffion has been named so as my OH is Welsh and I hoped that if I allowed him to name the beast I may be able to have another...I was right. He chose Ffion which is Welsh for 'foxglove'.

Maybe you can come for a holiday in the netherlands...and you can visit my heaven of coonies :-) And I promise you, my coonies like that they will all sit on your lap :-)))

I may have to take you up on that Conny. Buddy is a lap cat as well.

Budletts LifeofRiley - Riley, Rillington, Fatty, Belly (he's very lazy and rotund)
Budletts Charlie Mainechester - Chester, Chester-Pester, Baby Chester (he's 'little')
Yaheska Arctic-Warrior - Alfie, Alfonse, Get Down Alfie, Spoilt Brat, That Little Sh*t, (as in: "look what that little sh*t has done now!")
and the baby Yaheska P-Pawsfourthought - Oscar, Oskie-Poskie, Posks, Little Poskins, Mummys Little Treasure!

I had a t-shirt with 2 non-MCs on it called Sunshine and Shadow. Trouble was we ended up with 3 MCs (we just couldn't leave one behind!) so had to find a name to fit in. So we have Sunshine (registered name Sunny), Shadow and Moonlight!

Sunshine gets called big fat ginger boy and Moonlight is Moon or Moonie or Lune!! Shadow is plain old Shadow or Shad....

We chose Teddy after I became obsessed with the name Theodore. Dave says it has nothing to do with this but it so does! You know Alvin & The Chipmunks? Well I *love* the little cute fat one and he's called Theodore. I picked the name a long time before we even knew we'd end up with a boy kitten and Dave had initially said he didn't like it.

When we went to meet the kittens, we thought we were going to get a little silver with white boy and thought 'Teddy' didn't suit him just from seeing the photos. When we met Teddy we knew straight away that he was definitely a 'Teddy' and I think in some ways that's how we knew he was the one for us, seeing as we'd named him months before we even met him!

It was pretty controversial with my friends and family - most said it was a silly name for a cat but I told them if they continued to say things like that they'd never get to see him! They soon shut up.

He gets 'Tedders' most of the time (he really only gets called Teddy when he's being a brat!) and Dave sometimes calls him 'Teddington'

When we talk about getting another, we haven't quite got a name in mind...I reckon when we start talking about one specific name, that's when we'll head back to the breeder! I like Ruby (it's my birthstone) but I think I'd only call another red that and I'm not sure it's a good kitty name? I want one which goes nicely with Teddy :)
