My little Poppy's been attacked :(

This morning when I got up Poppy was in the conservatory where she usually is in the morning curled up on the chair, she got up when I went out for my morning coffee and ciggy and was lifting her paw up, she couldn't stand on it. Her pad had a large cut, it looked really painful, and on her leg was another mark. I rang the vet and took her straight down. He said it looks like she'd been in a fight, which unfortunately is only too common for her. He said it was too big to have been from another cat, more likely to have been from a fox or even a badger ? She is a fiesty madam with other animals as Harry knows only too well, she won't attack him but warns him with a hiss if he gets too close.

The vet gave her three injections, one was a painkiller, the other an anti-biotic, don't know what the third was for, and has given me two tablets to give her tomorrow, again painkiller and anti-biotic, which will be fun - not ! I have to take her back monday morning, he's going to see whether she needs to be kept in and cleaned up if it hasn't improved.

It's amazing really how cats seem to know somethings wrong, Harry, who is twice the size of her now is so gentle compared to her and she always scares him off, but he didn't attempt to try and wind her up and was quite happy to let me pick her up and cuddle her, when normally he is very jealous and vocal.

Having said all that she is still crying to get out, she really hates being inside, so what can you do ! :stressed:

Hang on ineven if it means a noisey night,as she is already at a disadvantage whatever got to her last night could still be around & she will be even slower at making her escape.
Give her a cuddle from us & hope she doesn't need any more treatment.

We managed to keep her in and she slept under our bed, We crushed up her anti-biotic tablet and mixed it with some cooked chicken which is normally her treat, but she seemed to know it was there. The vet said that this tablet was the important one out of the two, although Poppy may not agree, the other one being a painkiller ! - will persevere though. She seems a little better walking this morning so will have to see tomorrow.

Pleased that you could keep Poppy in,most of the cat ab's now are palatable but I always advice people to hang back on feeding a bit so that are really hungry,put it into something wet & smelly,they don't seem to pick up the powder so easily & only in a very small amount of food so its gone in a couple of mouthfulls & they are looking for more....
If I lived closer I would come & put it down the hatch for you.

Aww thank you ! that's good advise, as I only had to use 1/2 the tablet, I still have the other half so maybe i can try it in some wet food like you suggest. She's given up trying to get out this morning and used the litter tray, she's now laying on the bed again, so I'll try again later. x

If she like cheese you could squish it into a bit failing that the wraping up with a towel works on our fussy paws :LOL:

Like with us rest is a great healer so she is doing the right thing for her,I hate it when they get hurt.....

Well I took the bull by the horns so to speak and popped the other half in, surprisingly enough she was fine with it and after spitting it back out a couple of times, i cracked it. Managed to get the painkiller down as well so, again thanks for the advise ! :)

I hope little Poppy will feel a lot better soon. Vets usually sell a pill popper device, which enables you to slot the tablet in one end, then pull back on the other. This lets you push the pill further into the cat's mouth and more quickly so they don't spit it out.

Yes giving a pill can be tricky. What I find works well is the element of surprise. Have the pill ready, along with a cup of water and a teaspoon. Grab cat, hold on your lap so he can't back away, prise mouth open with the left hand, bracing cat with your upper body, shove pill in as far down as possible, then, using the teaspoon, put a drop of water down straight after. This makes them swallow so if you've got the pill in the right place it will go down. If you manage to complete the whole operation seamlessly and in seconds they will hardly even know what's happened. But if they cotton on to what you're about to do then you may have a fight on your hands, and stress to the cat (who's already poorly!)

1. Pick cat up and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

3. Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.

4. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.

5. Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from yard.

6. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

7. Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

8. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.

9. Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink one beer to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

10. Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Open another beer. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with rubber band.

11. Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Drink beer. Fetch bottle of Scotch. Pour shot, drink. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus shot. Apply whiskey compress to cheek to disinfect. Toss back another shot. Throw tee-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

12. Call fire department to retrieve the friggin' cat from tree across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil-wrap.

13. Tie the dang thing's front paws to rear paws with twine and bind tightly to leg of dining room table, find heavy duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of steak. Be rough about it. Hold head vertically and pour two pints of water down throat to wash pill down.

14. Consume remainder of Scotch. Get spouse to drive you to emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.

15. Arrange for Humane Society to collect mutant cat from **** and call local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters :rofl::rofl::rofl:

....and now my top tip for giving a pill to a dog.
Wrap it in bacon.

I laughed, especially because as I said it was surprisingly easy, that was until I went upstairs to check on her on the bed, only to discover a tablet stuck to her back !!!! lol :)

Ah so she's a hamster cat then :LOL: Scutter used to keep them in his cheek for ages. Im so glad its easier to give the dogs pills Banjo has to have up to 6 a day :sad2: he sits & waits for his canopies now :rofl:

A a rule I don't take any nonsense from my cats when it comes to giving them meds! Open wide and straight down-hold mouth closed briefly and massage throat! But having said that one of my moggies who is actually the smallest of our clan, will not take tablets. She becomes a viscous she devil!!! Even the vet gave up on her after putting her in a special bag for naughty cats, zipping it up so she couldn't attack and still could not give the tablet!!! Lol

Thanks Jo, going back to the vets tomorrow, so I'll let you all know how she gets on, for now the fiesty little madam is taking it out on everyone including Harry (bless him) because she can't go out, so at least in her mind she's feeling better :)

Mine is hide it in a knob of butter, used to have a GSD who was epileptic and the tablets are tiny they used to fall out of food but butter worked a treat as they held them in. The upside of this was his coat was fantastic.

I have not tried to give the terrors tablets yet but am in awe of the vets skill at giving worming tablets.

Thanks for all your lovely comments ! The update is that Poppy had to go back to the vets today and he kept her in to check it out further. He gave her a general anaesetic just so he could get a closer look at it. He has now changed his mind about how it happened saying it looked more like a laseration, possibly from some glass.

The bad news was that she had severed a tendon, but the good news was that he was able to repair it. She had cut one of her pads off almost completely it was just hanging on but the little mark that we could see on her leg turned out to be the worse injury.

We have to take her back on Wednesday so she has to be kept in until then - should be fun :stressed:

Poor poor Poppy, give her some more cuddles from all of us,hopefully after what she has been through today she will not be too worried about being confined for the next couple of days. Will watch for Wednesdays update,surely can't be any worse than what has happened to her today....

So sorry to hear about Poppy (poor little soul). Coming in a bit late to this thread, but we have found corned beef to be a really good way of getting pills into reluctant cats (Hobbes would sell his granny AND his beloved catnip fishy for a bit of Spam or corned beef).

Our now departed MC mix had HCM and so was taking pills several times per day for years, so we got pretty good with pill giving. Generally used a pill popper, though even they take some practice to get good at. It is probably a good idea to have one on hand. Our vet sells them. Having them between your legs is probably the best way to control them if they are resisting.

The vet people just grab them by the scruff of the neck, which naturally causes them to put their heads back and relax, and then they pop the pills in with their fingers. I was never able to get the hang of this with our boy, as his scruff was very large and tight (even the vet techs had some difficulty with him).

Never had any luck getting pills into cats using food. Quite a shock given how well food works with dogs.

As I have said before I am new to being a cat slave and after reading about the fun and games that is giving cats pills I think they are far harder to fool than a dog!

Anyway I hope Poppy is feeling a little better after her vets visit and I have to say I wouold have asked for the injectable versions and a quick lesson in how to give the jabs!!

Just a quick update. Went back to the vets tonight, he was pleased with everything, and said she was healing well. I thought the reason for the visit today was to have the stitches removed, but it was just for him to make sure it was going on ok. He wants to see her next Thursday to take out the stitches and so poor old Poppy has to stay in for another week !

Im so glad the vet's happy with her hope you cope with the nagging to get out :winkwink: if it makes you feel any better we have pills to get down Simba for the next fortnight :wacko:

Great news about Poppy,bet keeping her in is minor to the relief you must feel about everything being ok.
Will be interesting also to hear how the pill giving is going with Simba,will lay bets that he works out more ways of evading the pill than mum comes up with giving it.....

Lets just say Simba 1 me 0 today & Louie was'nt helping matters I shall try again later :LOL:

Oh dear, what's wrong with Simba then ? :sad2:

He had a tooth out & a scale & polish in january took him for his check up & his gums are sore looking but so is his throat :sad2: he has been pawing at his face but only ocasionally & only after he has been eating Louie's food, anyway the vet said his teeth are fine but older cats can get some ????????// cant mem so he had a jab & pills & back next week to see if any better, he cant be to bad as he has put some weight on he's now a whoping 3.8kg :LOL: which is huge for him last year before he had his thyroids out he was 2.?kg he's 16&half yrs old & been like a new cat since his op, Louie follows him around like his apprentice :LOL: its realy funny to watch now that Louie is probably 3 times the size of Simba :rofl:

Latest score Simba 1 me 1 but Louie knocked the bottle of pills over very helpful :nod:

Have to give my tiny 3kg moggie 2 pills a day .... hate to battle with an MC . Have the am one sussed , go into her room say good morning she yawns and meows and pill gets popped in ... teatime not so simple as she is then awake so OH does it
