Hello everybody and a question please!
Hi All, just joined here as I got my first Coonlet last weekend. She's a great character, love her to bits already and she's got some guts having already stood her ground against my 47kg loopy German Shep...
However, I have a quick question for those more experienced with this lovely breed than I.... she's a blue smoke but has a rusty cast to her, which is quite brown on her back, although she's still palegrey/white underneath. The breeder assured me that it's just her kitten coat, but am I being led down a path or not? I don't think it really matters now, but I am thinking about breeding her and want to plan early, however if she is going to stay 'rusty' it may be more difficult to get her to breed true.
What do people think?

Hi and welcome.
First of all, is she registered on the active register? If not then she has only been registered as a pet and so shouldn't be bred from.
The rusty colour is kitten coat and will grow out as her adult coat comes through.
Best wishes
Louise

Hi Louise - thanks for the response. No, at the moment she isnt on the active register, but I have spoken to the breeder about this and she has offered help in finding a stud etc when I have made up my mind. At that point she will transfer her for me, and has told me the cost etc, so it all has to be weighed up. Of course, it isnt about the money (not that I expect to make any! ) , but I think it would be fascinating to see what colours I would get. I've bred Chinchillas before, but they were fairly predictable, colour-wise!

Would love to see some photos of her when you have time!
Which breeder did you get her from?

Our black smoke Monty also has a brownish hue on his back and even in the lighter parts of the fur on his belly and neck. Breeders gave me various explanations. One told me it had to do with the food he eats, another one said it had to do with the acidity in his mother's womb and that he would grow out of it.
I don't care really... he is not a breeding cat and I don't plan to show him. He's for cuddling and a bit of rust color doesn't make any difference for that purpose.
