Bedtime Stories
So I get in from work last night after one of those truly awful days where it was so bad you can't even be bothered to grumble about it, and I decided to hit the sack early and read in bed.
Freyja loves to sit on the bed - well, actually she likes to psycho out on the bed usually - and last night I just needed to loose myself in a good Sci-Fi. But she wanted to play Death To The Duvet and I firmly asked her to stop. Which she duly did, but sat there twitching and swishing whilst looking for the green light to go mental again.
And for some reason, I decided to read to her. Yes, that's right, I read my cat a bedtime story. Not really expecting it to make a blind bit of difference but my whole day had been such an unmitigated disaster that I thought, "why not?".
But here's the thing... firstly, her body posture relaxed a little, kind of like leaning on one elbow. Then her eyes blinked slowly shut. Then she did that lovely little thing they do when they lay down like a dog and rest their chins on the crossed front paws. Then she laid her head on the bed. She didn't sleep, but she just rested so blissfully.
Two chapters in (oh, yeah, I really went for it), she then did that other fabulous thing when they're so content they roll onto their backs, back legs akimbo, front paws flopped out over their chests, chins and bellies exposed for a damned good rub. She stayed like that for another chapter.
Spell was broken when OH started moving around downstairs, but for four whole chapters I was able to have my cat on my bed and keep my toes intact. And I didn't have to persuade my inquisitive kitten that she really was just a little TOO wide to be a truly useful book mark.
So, I can recommend the Dresden Files as means to send your cats to sleep. I'm going to try it again tonight - it would be really funny if I've got a book worm for a cat, because I generally won't leave my house unless I've got a book with me!

Wow Karen, that's fascinating! I know they love attention and the sound of your voice, but this is something else! Maybe I should try it....I'm not a fan of Sci-Fi, so might have a go with Pride & Prejudice!

I am very used to that.... she drives me crazy... she is the kind of kid that reads a book over and over and over again.... I used to be like that.. Now once is enough...
She has read Harry Potter in English about 10 times... ALL OF THEM..
In Dutch 5 times all of them..
In German now she is getting through them..
She also has taken to her room all my Ruth Rendell books..
I am going to go on Amazon later... and see if I can get them.....
Thanks so much... You are a star!!!!
