I wish people luck with the covered litter boxes. We have a number of similar ones (they are basically this model: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Van-Ness-Extra-Giant-Enclosed/dp/B0002ASCGM/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1265837330&sr=8-12"]Amazon.com: Van Ness Extra Giant Enclosed Cat Pan: Home & Garden@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41CjEFR%2BPrL.@@AMEPARAM@@41CjEFR%2BPrL[/ame] Where are the tops? In the garage! Several of our cats refused to use the covered boxes, so we gave up on them. I would expect that introducing them as young kittens would be more successful in general, but cats definitely vary in what they will accept. My mother-in-law's cat (not a MC) happily took to a covered box, but as I said, a couple of our MCs simply refused to go in them--ever.

One of our girl's is so fussy about her litter that even getting too much of the unscented version into a box will cause her to avoid that box (despite the litter ads I see that claim that cats hate scented litter). We went through a very trying couple of months with her peeing outside of the litter boxes--to the point that we were concerned that we were going to have to return her to the breeder! At the time, we read that this is the number one reason that cats are gotten rid of. Once they get into the habit of peeing on carpeting, etc., it can be very difficult to break them of the habit. Search a bit on the web and you will find numerous articles about techniques to try to stop this. So I would just urge some caution in people trying to get your cat to use a litter box that *you* want if they appear to dislike it. And of course not all cats are equally happy with all litters, so the same caution applies there. We use Fresh Step (clumping) and World's Best now. Were hoping to switch over to the WB exclusively, but only two of the four cats like it, and even they rarely do their poos in it. Also, while we like it a great deal because it isn't dusty and is non-toxic, it definitely does not suppress the odor of cat poop as well as the Fresh Step.

Personally, I don't think most of these litter boxes are large enough for big male MCs. These cats are like 40" from tip of nose to tip of tail. You expect that size to go into a 22x18" covered box and be comfortable doing his business and not get his tail in something nasty? Here is what we got a few months ago that actually is big enough: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Petmate-Giant-Litter-Colors-Vary/dp/B000HHLVA4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1265837330&sr=8-2"]Amazon.com: Petmate Giant Litter Pan, Colors Vary: Home & Garden@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31SKtpsf%2BYL.@@AMEPARAM@@31SKtpsf%2BYL[/ame]

Our big male loves this box. He uses this box exclusively now for his "solid business." That should tell you something about how he feels about the size of the other boxes. It holds like 30lbs of clay litter. Nobody goes outside of it because their butts are pressed right up against the side because they barely fit in the box (as happens sometimes with the other boxes). Does take up quite a bit of floor space, however. We would like to have a second one if we could figure out a reasonable place to put it, but having one is still nice for the big male to have a box he likes.

    Litter box

I've just bought one of the giant types for my male moggie. Harley was always missing and always stuck his bum out of the others as he is so big! I would be clearing wee and poo up constantly. This tray was a god send. It is fantastic to say the least. He is happy to use it and it catches everything!
