Lola 2yrs, is new to our home ( 2 weeks ) Does NOT want to be brushed HELP!!!!!

We are new to having cats. Always had dogs. Lola was in a shelter for 1 1/2 years then was adopted for about 6 months, then they gave her up. She is now ours... and we are NOT giving up on her!!! She is already a HUGE part of our family.

With that said. She is shedding like CRAZY. She does NOT want to be brushed. We have been sucessfull while she is eating for about 5 strokes, but that is it. She is going to a goomer tomorrow as she had mats from previous owner when I took her to the vet right after we got her, last Monday, which they removed.... but since she was in bad shape, we decided to have her professionaly groomed.... Not sure what to expect but she needs it. Hopefully from that point on she will allow us to start brushing her dialy to avoid something like this again.

Any and all help , ideas on how to get a 2 yr old MC Mix to let us brush her would be FABULOUS!

Two weeks is not much time for Lola to begin to trust you, so I would say just continue to do brief brushings and hope she gets better about it. She may but she may not. One of our girls is just terrible about brushing or even trying to cut mats out. Bella can be sleeping on my lap purring like mad, but if I start feeling of her mats, she will eventually swat me. She is a very dominant personality cat. Our big boy Remy, on the other hand, will let me brush him and actually seems to like it (as long as I am not tugging on too many mats).

I also never had cats growing up as my mother is extremely allergic to them, though my wife had one. We had two Maltese dogs, but seven and a half years ago my wife started feeding a large stray cat, and we eventually took him in. My first cat! Turned out to be a MC mix and just a wonderful guy--eventually. It took a good year before he really trusted us. Dogs can be won over much more easily by whoever feeds them.

Want to see a mostly shaved MC? Karma was nothing but mat when we took him in, and vet had to almost completely shave him when he was being neutered. It actually made him very cuddly, and helped integrate him, as he slept right against me in bed for some time. Me, who was initially planning on taking him to the Humane shelter when my wife started feeding him, and me who thought he didn't like cats. (We now have four MCs.) Anyway, here are a few photos of Karma shaved and eventually with a full coat:

Might get better. Or might not. We have had Bella since she was a kitten, but she has a very dominant personality and won't put up with much. She loves us dearly, but wants things her way regardless. I just think--based on experience with two cats we did not get as kittens--that it can take nearly a year until you know how they will eventually behave with you.

As said before, I don't think there's a hard and fast answer to this one! We've had Gracie for about 8 months now and she has finally got to the stage where she just gives in when it comes to grooming as she's learn the quicker it's over the quicker she can have her treats. She doesn't enjoy it but at least the squawking and crying like she's being beaten has stopped now! Monty on the other hand - now he's a one! He's not called the 'Wriggle Meister' for nothing. I have never in my life owned a cat who is so intent on wriggling and squirming to get away from the brush. He's been like it since we brought him home at 13 weeks old and is now 10 months old so not sure he will ever improve. But hey, we persevere on - if nothing else I know I'm getting a good aerobic workout when his brush comes out

Thanks everyone. She is at the groomers right now. They are going to just do the bath and brush/comb her.... we will continually work on getting her used to the comb/brush.
