I appreciate that you are not worried about breeding or showing but even the GCCF has said that the kittens would be classed as 'unrecognised breed'
There may be a legitimate reason for them not being registered but I still wouldn't be happy with it to be honest - I would never consider not registering a litter....that is all part of breeding.

While looking for a kitten I went through a few breeders, looking for those within a manageable driving distance first. Then I looked at their websites - if they had one. I must say I was more tempted by those that did as you got a good look at their cats and previous litters. I then rang a couple or emailed them. I of course was asked a lot of questions which I was fine with, as I feel any reputable breeder will be picky with who she sells her kitten to but I too, like Tomian when I finally decided on one and went to see them had a list of questions to ask. Mostly though again like Tomian they were all answered for me before I asked. We got to see mum and dad and the other kittens. I am paying £450, but for that he comes vaccinated, wormed, neutered and microchipped. She also offered a life time of help and the offer to take him back if things didn't work out. (this I feel is important even though it's the last thing I'd ever want to do). I liked the breeder and felt that she really cared about her kittens and of course totally fell in love with little Simba. The most important thing for me was that they looked very healthy, happy cats. The parents too. I haven't even asked about paper work although I will probably get it. But I did ask about any hereditary diseases and tests that were done for them. Apart from that I think you have to feel in your heart that it's the right choice of kitten for you - any doubts and I would back away. I did notice on my search for a Maine Coon how much the price varied. A long time ago I know someone who bred Osicats. She had an accident mating between her cats. She wasn't sure which cat was the dad. She sold these kittens for a small nominal fee about a third of what they were worth because she said it wasn't a planned pregnancy and they wouldn't be registered. We took one of these kittens and she was the most beautiful cat and I wouldn't have been able to tell whether she was pedigree or not. At the time we lived near a fast road. When she was just over a year old she got run over. It broke our hearts and I swore I'd never get another cat. Sorry think I've gone off topic!

hiya
yes i know ive been quamming it all day my other half spoke to her today and because dam is tica reg sire is gccf and over 2 yr old she cannot reg tica one with gccf as you have up to 2 yrs to do that, also said that you have to belong to a cat club for 1 year to register a prefix? even doing so now she couldn technically make a gccf standard (breed) cat out of these two because dam is too old to be registered now with gccf its all a bit odd but anyways i beleive its her decision and is not for lowering any price because they are quality bloodlines. i whole heartedly am comfortable with her and confident about the cats being mainecoons 100% when im older and wiser ill look into it more lol...im getting a mainecoon with no papers (gonna get chucked outta here now aint i) lol xx

My friend bought a Yorkshire terrier a few months ago. The breeder offered to get him registered but it was to be an extra few quid (not sure about that either) but my friend only wanted a pet and wasn't bothered with showing or breeding so took the Yorkshire without papers for a lesser charge. the dog is a little darling.
Your kitten looks beautiful and looks more "coonlike" then mine. If your comfortable with buying from that particular breeder then thats grand. Go for it!
I don't think you should be paying full price though!
Like Karena my breeder has been very helpful and I have been keeping her and her daughter updated on Winston's progress.

as long as you're happy I don't think it matters.
We decided if we were paying alot of money then we wanted the kitten to be registered and have papers. We only had a choice of a couple of breeders in western australia (most of the breeders are over east), but we went and looked at the breeder and her cats when we were last in perth and it happened to be the day the kittens were born so I got a look at them.
The cats were all healthy and happy and the vet was coming to check the kittens that day so I was happy with the breeder.

Hi, just to add my two pence worth. I think you and your other half clearly have your hearts set on the kitten and will obviously be great parents to him which I think is the most important aspect here. The fact you're asking questions and joined this forum shows that you are caring and want the best for him.
Although it might be worth politely asking for a discount as you are not getting the full set of papers required to certify him with GCCF as a bonafide maine coon. Although he is, I think a discount would be appropriate because that's something you expect when you're paying the sum for a certified kitty.

thanks very much im glad you think so!
yes its been discussed and ive been told the reason for the price not to be dropped is because of great bloodline and them being rare over here, at the end of the day im seeing it now its her property and i want it so she can pick what price to sell, alot of ppl here are unaware to what type of certs etc you need so she could easily sell it at this price to somebody else....and i dont want that to happen, not to worry i have much a much better approach to dealing with these sorts of things

Just read a couple of posts that hinted at not being aware of GCCF guidelines I thought I would point out that vaccinations for GCCF registered kittens are part of the recommendations that breeders should follow. They aren't doing potential buyers a favour by including it in the price they quote you.
I wish you the best of luck with this kitten. Hopefully they can be registered at a later date.
