Dirty eyes
Does anyone else have a build up of sleepy dust in their kitty's eyes. Every morning when Simba wakes he has little dried bits at the corner of his eyes. I wipe them out and he is getting so used to me doing it now he is very good. There is no infection there. I think I read somewhere once that red or cream cats were more prone to it.

Yes, Hank has the same, everyday no fail he has a build up of sleep under his eyes. We just wipe it off and he's so good he doesnt mind. I didnt know that red & cream cats are prone to it tho.

I may be wrong - just though I remembered reading it somewhere. Simba is getting a lot better but he hated it at first.

Yes we often have this too with our red MCs. I really think it is just more visible with the red and other light colored cats--not more frequent. Our other cats are all black around their eyes so you cannot easily see any residue (even so we do sometimes see it on them). I know that we used to worry about this, but it is apparently normal. Seems to get better as they get older--i.e., it is more frequent in kittens. It is generally very easy to remove with your finger! Does not look good in photos, of course. I have had to "photoshop" a number of photos of our big red male to remove the dark eye residue bits from an otherwise great photo. I am quite good at doing this now (takes some practice to get the edits to look natural).

Yes same for us too, but I think it's probably because of the colouring like NCarver says. I have noticed that it is getting less as Harry gets older. Wish he could learn to clean his nose though, whether it's the food or the fact that he doesn't know how to clean himself properly but Harry always has a dirty nose, which I must admit I wipe with my finger, sounds horrible I know, but you got to get him unexpectedly and you only get one shot at it before he complains vigerously !

Yes, kittens often seem to get dirty noses. They get stuff lodged on the side, in the opening/slit. This gets much less frequent as their noses grow. We had one male that always had a dirty nose as a kitten. He must have been sticking his nose into his food. You can dislodge the dirt, but isn't always too easy. I have used both fingernail and moistened cotton swab (Q-tip) at various times with varying amounts of success.

Yeppers. We get the same with both of ours too. Ive slowly been getting mine used to being touched on their mouth, nose, cheeks so that when we start brushing their teeth its not going to be a massive shock.
This has made it much easier for me to simply wipe it away without much issue. Having said that, there were times when they wouldnt let me get to it and they dealt with it themselves too.

Yes, our red boys (Widget and Hobbes) both had/have mucky eyes AND snotty noses! Widget wasn't too bad about having his eyes wiped and nose "blown" for him, but Hobbes acts a bit like a little kid whose auntie has licked her hankie to clean his face! Not keen, but it's that, or Photoshop the pictures, LOL!
