Proper Feeding

Hello,
My Magic is doing so well. He seems to have doubled in size in just a few weeks. I've read that cats should not be fed a diet of only dry cat food. Magic came to me eating Royal Canin Baby Cat. So I continued feeding this and also bought a few cans of the matching wet food.

The wet food upset Magic's stomach and he had runny poos. I've slowly started switching him over to Authority kitten food dry. It has chicken as the first ingredient and Royal Canin has chicken meal, so I thought it would be a better food. How much wet food does a cat/kitten require?

Magic has been wonderful. He is so friendly. Every person that comes to my home holds him and loves him up and he just loves it. He starts purring the moment he sees people. He is sometimes a lapbaby, but mostly not. Mostly when he is sleepy he wants to curl up right next to me. I love my kitty:smile:

I feed my two maine coon kittens the Royal Canin Instinctive kitten food (wet) and the Maine Coon 31 by the same company. My male "Ollie" and his sister "Sissy" eat 3 cans of wet EACH :0) and unlimited dry food daily, along with tons of water. Here is our routine: They wake up my husband at 5 am. They get some kitty treats in the kitchen. 7 a.m. first round of wet food, one can each. At 1pm they either share one can or both have a can depending on activity/hunger. 7 pm Dinner of 1 can each. Bed time: a few more kitty treats.
Some times their poos are runnier than normal and they are stinky all of the time. Oh my goodness, run you out of the house stink! LOL

I've been feeding this combo for 7 months. I've tried changing to cheaper/different brands from time to time, but it always turns out awful. Puking, even smellier and runnier poos, tummy aches, and sad faces from them. About every three months their appetites lag for a week or so and then they will eat a third more of their normal food for a week or so. They act like they are starving! We have concluded that this eating behavior happens just before a MAJOR growth spurt.

Ollie and Sissy just enjoyed their first birthday on June 8th and I'm wondering if I should switch them to adult wet food now. I don't know how long Coonies are considered to be "kittens".

I am happy that you are smitten with your kitty! I adore mine as well, they are characters for sure!

Kendra, may I ask how big the cans are?
I saw in my head big cans but I believe you are talking abt the smaller cans?

My furries have Royal Canin Main coon dry food (thats available whole day) and they get each ca 100 gr wet food in the morning and eveing and in between some little extras.
I don't know if the wet food I feed is available in UK. the brand is called Felix and it is not in cans but in small bags.
I tried canned food but they all decline in total and run in strike. This one in bags from Felix is the only one they like.

I have 3 beasts at home plus one moggie, and this is what I've found.

It is quite right that they should not be fed dry food only. Wet food is better as they need the moisture. But it is a matter of finding the right wet food for them. A lot of the mainstream wet foods are loaded with vegetable proteins and carbs which cats are not able to digest, hence you sometimes get runny/smelly poos. Are there any grain-free wet foods available where you are? I get German/Swedish brands like Bozita and Smilla online from zooplus.co.uk. Or you could try introducing some raw food.

As for quantity, a kitten can eat as much as it wants, and it can be a lot as I'm sure you've found! An adult cat should eat 2-3% of its bodyweight per day.

Kitten food, and food for various breeds, is a gimmick, IMO. A kitten of any breed can eat good quality 'adult' food. Quality food is suitable for any cat, of any age.

When does the MC stop being a kitten? Erm, never! I am sure Jackie would agree with this, as she has some older lads who may just prove the theory! And Felix pouches are available in the UK, in fact I think Jackie's crew does well on them.

I'm not a big fan from RC, most of my cats trow up from it and get flat shit from it.
RC is very Commercial a lot of different food for all breeds.not nesserary I think.
I don't feed it to my cats.
I give more raw meat. and Animonda cans.
And dry food from Prins and Animonda,
Kitten food I don't give it. It's not nessessary.
My Kittens get carnibest ..it's raw meat with all good stuff in it.
And the eat with the dry food from the adults.
Also the cats eat chicken, heart, liver and other parts from a chicken and the one day old little chickens.

Hiya, when my monster was a kitten I used to feed him a combi of RC kitten 36 (left down all day) then he got bozita canned food once a day and whiskas kitten sachets once a day. I found too much of either wet food gave him a bad belly... These days he gets RC Maine Coon down all the time, 2 sachets of whiskas in the morning and 1/2 a tin of bozita in the evening.

Thanks everyone. I will look into the brands suggested here. And perhaps some raw meats. I have the dry kibble available all day and then a can of wet food, but it goes to waste because he really wont eat it.

You know that whiskas is MC Donalds for cats :LOL: ? Its not the best food for cats you can give...Bozita is ok :winkwink:

How right you are Howlinbob 10ys + & still can behave like a naughty babe so although we are told they "mature"at about the age of four think that is in body growth only not mind...!
My crew are fed mostly on the Felix tins,works out cheaper with six than the sachets also find they don't seem to be so rich as the sachets which have given mine upset tums if they have too many,as an occasional treat they do have a carton of Bozita for brekkie & yes all of mine have done very well on this diet from a very early age with no problems at all.What did cat owners do when the only choice was tinned Kit Kat or raw meat caught fresh on the wing/foot,very pleased that our pampered furries don't do that but have it given to them the right way by their faithful owners/slaves....x
