Diarrhea after removing dry food

Hi all,

I'm looking at moving my fluffies onto a raw diet. They were on free feeding RC MC dry and a sachet of Felix As Good As It Looks in the morning and evening.

I've gradually phased out the dry food altogether and up until then, they were doing fine. However, since the dry has gone completely, Moto has suddenly got diarrhea. The wet food is still the same and he's lively and normal, but he's pooping once a day and it's very runny.

Any ideas as to a) why and b) what I need to do? This is only day 3 of pure wet food and he's drinking well, playing etc and is otherwise normal.

Since when you changed?
Some cats needs time to get used to new food and during this time they can have running poop. You should watch this carefulle and maybe make a mix of both in the beginning, so that they don't have a complete change immediately but slowly.

Hi,

I phased out the dry over a two week period, after a week of no overnight kibble, and he was fine until the day after the dry was removed ... That's when the diarrhea started. He was only getting 5 kibble bits on the last day.

He's only going once a day, but it's very runny. No blood though.

Is the wet too rich do you think?

Yep could be,although mine are fed mostly wet too rich a food gives them upset tums...

Well done for phasing out the kibble.
Yes could be that the wet food is too rich for him. Try another wet food. Bozita and Smilla from zooplus are grain free and not dear.
Better still, phase in some raw. I am sure you have read up about it but if you need any more info on the raw diet give me a shout.

It is also possible the diarrhoea and the food change are unrelated. Could be down to a tummy bug or even a parasite.
As Louisa says, you could start introducing some raw, preferably something which contains bone (such as chicken necks or a preground mix). But if you don’t see improvement soon you might want to have him (and a poo sample) checked.

Soooo, decided to move them both onto cooked chicken for a couple of days and, fingers crossed, no diarrhea so far! I came home yesterday evening to a very messy Moto... Just as well he loves having a bath and being dried, but I have my limits lol ;-), hence the change to cooked :-)

Also thought this would be a great way to just move them both onto raw ... phase it back in rather than the wet (just as you said Howlin!). Am sooo excited about them going raw :-)

Let's see how the next few days go.
