Thread: Getting a Maine Coon as a second cat...?

Hello there. I recently got a 14 week old rescue cat, she's a domestic short hair, quite shy but settling in now and very sweet.

However, I think she'd like some company, and I've read that Maine Coons are friendly and gentle but I wanted to see what you all thought as I am wondering about getting a MC kitten (male) as part of the family. Any help, or tips, much appreciated.

Now come on Ben we are all MC lovers/addicts on here so what do you think we are going to say.......
I honestly think if you get yourself a baby boy you will have no problems at all both furries will appreciate the other ones company & you can have double trouble.... just be careful where you get babe from you want to go to a well known or reccomended breeder hopefully where babes are raised in with family & you can see mum at least,it needs to be 12 to 13 weeks old & vaccinated,with that under its belt hopefully it will have had a good start in life,if you have any doubts etc or come up with any prefixes throw them out on here & hopefully one of the many MC slaves will say if they have any babes from them.....good luck & cuddles to your little girl......x

Ah thanks jckkerrison very kind of you. Great advice. Thought you might be a little biased... Are MCs generally good with other cats? And one last question (maybe), is there a particular place to find good breeders?

hi Ben - MCs are normally a social breed - with the exception of... mine who is actually a pirate. Obviously make sure you have them both spayed. Where are you situated? we have people from all over on this forum so before we send some names.... I'm in the UK myself.

Hi Ben,like all animals you do get the odd rogue one in any breed but on the whole MC's are very laid back,easy going & the more you put in the more you get back from them in bucketfulls,they are very people orintated cats but also get on with other cats or dogs..... If you are over here go onto the Maine Coon club UK site as there is a breeders list there which could give you some ideas, if you then go onto any of those breeders sites they very often then have links to their breeder friends,as I said any doubts chuck names into the pot on here & see if anybody has bought from the breeder/s you might be interested in,I was lucky when I first had MC's as there wasn't too many & it wasn't the minefield it is now,also thought later you want to know that parents are at least HCM tested too......x

It's a bit of a drive for you, but we have just agreed to buy a kitten from Elmcoon in Barnsley.
I can honestly say that they are the most positive breeders I have ever spoken to, they know their cats extremely well and have a real understanding of cat health and social interactions. They had a whole pile of cats of varying ages who all just get along with each other really well, much more like a pack of dogs than what you would expect for cats. When we some on the phone before the visit, as our MC seemed to be lonely and I basically wanted advice, they said that cats were sociable animals who needed company. I wasn't to sure about this as our last cat was a moggy who would try to kill anything with 4 legs that came within reach! However, MCs are a bit different!
We came home from the visit, having spent a couple of hours with a load of really chilled-out cats and really saw for the first time how Sid is quite anxious - he follows me everywhere - and felt that we have been doing him a disservice keeping him as an only cat. We are sure that the kitten will be no trouble - she is so used to other cats - and she will be able to show Sid how to behave.
So, they are a long way from nearby, but I would google Elmcoon and have a chat with them if you want a kitten.
