Showing tips?
Hi everyone,
Am thinking of showing Rasputin... Breeder is happy for me to and have had a 2nd and 3rd opinion; biggest thing that's been picked up is that his markings on his back aren't great (but fine on sides, legs, face etc.) I've checked his tail for kinks and that his teeth meet properly and all seems fine. He's a little bit triangular in face but hoping will broaden a bit as he gets older. He's also not that fluffy yet! (But is only 6 months old).
Will probably be late Aug that he does his first show (GCCF), as long as we can get him registered in time which will make him an adult by about 4 days (eek).
Has anyone got any tips on presenting him to make him look his best? Any potential showing pitfalls a complete newbie should be aware of?
Have attached some pics of him (although completely unable to get a decent side-one one, need better camera) further opinions on how he may do would be welcomed!
Apologies for the Jilly Cooper novel in one of them... I'm ill and therefore reading trash (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!)

If you hadn't mentioned the Jilly Cooper wouldn't even have noticed, had to go back & see where I had missed it,a little bit of light hearted trash is what we all need sometimes so you enjoy......
He looks a well grown babe, long in the body, good tail length, nice ear set & from what I can see nice profile, shame the poor boy will be in adult class for his first show though, who is he registered with at the moment ?
Pity you couldn't pick up on one of the others,Tica or FB,I know you can do one show with FB without being registered with them or a club & I think you can with Tica,it would just give you the feel of things but whatever its sure worth giving it a go,as you say he is going to change in looks quite a bit as he grows but as for his coat pattern its a long while since I have showed with GCCF so don't know how many points are involved with the actual pattern but go & have some fun,we have a great time at FB & have made lots of friends both two legged & four & that is the part I love...x

I read somewhere that the markings don't matter - it's the quality of the fur and the overall colour(s). It would be unfair I imagine to judge a cat by the patterns on it's coat... I bathed my boys a week before the show and powdered just Leo a coupld of days later and lots of brushing and stuff.
Good luck!

Hi Pralinehalo,
We started showing just last year so like you we weren't totally sure what to do, what the judges look for etc. etc.
We give the cat a good shampoo on the Weds before a show, then we powder her on the Thursday, and Friday night (lots of powder, rub it in well, and brush it all out.) The tip we were given is to use normal Baby powder on silver/blue coats and Fullers Earth on Browns, Reds and Torties. You can pick up Fullers Earth fairly cheaply on eBay.
Also try to make sure the claws are clipped, and the eyes and ears are nice and clean.
Here's a link to the Judges comments on our Saffi from last year it gives you some idea what they look for. You can see we went from absolute novices to having our girl made up to Champion in just 5 shows.

He's not registered with anyone at the moment, the breeder sent me a 4-gen pedigree and a signed declaration of mating but hadn't registered him herself. I gather that's not quite usual? I'd like him to have her prefix so have emailed her asking her to GCCF register him and send me transfer paper. Am hoping as paid £400 that she'll do it and not expect me to pay for it! Am going with GCCF as I have a friend who will be showing her new kitten (her current MC didn't like showing) and so I can go to shows with her although agree a bit harsh that his first show he'll only be adult by a couple of days!

For the amount you paid your kitty damn well should have been registered! I can't believe that people get away with taking the 'full monty' and not doing their part of the deal. I have said this before on pets4homes... if you don't get the registration documents then there is no garentee that your kitten is actually a pedigree MC. I hope you can get your boy registered and your breeder was just being tight as it isn't free to register a litter and if your kitten was sold as a pet then that may have been the excuse, BUT please people do not part with your money unless you have seen the parent cat's 'pink slips' and that the parents are both on the active register... if they are not it will say so non active on the slip. This will mean that any kittens bred will never be able to be registered!!!
On the show subject GCCF shows can be fun too, the Somerset was great, I'd love to give FB a go but they no longer seem to have shows in the West... and yes I still think TICA stink!!! (based on my own first had experience... other people very much disagree on this one)
I hope you will be ok and go the the West of England... it is a very hot venue so cool pack/fans are in order... we went to the Bristol there in May and it was so hot we felt awfull... the cats were grumpy too!

I did a fair bit of checking before going with the breeder, couldn't find anything negative and she's properly registered and everything. I'm pretty sure she was just being tight as I bought him as a pet and didn't even think about showing until after we'd had him a while and a friend commented he'd got the sort of personality that might well suit it.
Her website said 'all reg papers' after neutering but didn't specify GCCF so it's probably my bad for not checking first, I just assumed when I got all his papers that he would already have been registered. I don't think there would be any issue registering him as she said she was perfectly happy for me to show him, I just hope that now I've asked her to register him so he can have the correct prefix that she'll do it without asking me to pay extra. She's been really great about everything else so hopefully this can be sorted quickly and easily.
Show-wise the one we're hoping to go to is the one in Thornbury
