Rasputin attended his first show today and it was a bit of a mixed bag. Unfortunately the judges determined that he’s not a blue silver but a silver (4 separate judges confirmed this) and so he had to be disqualified from the breed class. They were really nice about it but said only the breeder can change his registered colour so couldn't correct it at the show.
The good news is that the judges spoke to me and said they were impressed with him in terms of presentation, personality and looks and that they’d really recommend he gets registered in the correct colour as they think he’d do well and they also said they would have been happy to give him first place in the class.
I'm a bit gutted to be honest as (I'm sure everyone knows) it's not cheap sending them to a show and I had to pay the full cost of registering as well as the transfer cost initially. On the positive side at least they thought he had potential!
Do you all think I'm justified in expecting the breeder to pay the cost of amending his registration? I wasn't entirely happy paying everything to register him initially but decided to go ahead and not make a fuss because I didn't say I was planning to show him when I originally bought him but think it would be a bit unfair if I was expected to pay for (what essentially) wasn't my fault. I have emailed the breeder asking if she can sort it out but just thought would get some opinions as to what a fair solution would be...
PS Just noticed I made a lovely typo in the title of this... It's been a long day!
Anyway, picture of kitty at the show...Attachment 3653

So sorry for the wrong info from the breeder, but it sounds like you have a winning cat!! Congrats for that:)
-
Congrats... I find it bizarre that you had to pay to register him in the first place that is the breeders responsibility unless you got him for nothing or very very cheap??
However as the breeder should have known what colour he was when she registered him then she I think should pay to change the colour of him too. She/he is the only one that can do this and given that you have lost all that money with the show I think she owes you..
How can anyone mix up a Blue silver with a black????
-
Well done on your results. It can be a nerve wracking experience! Don't be down hearted about the Open result. You wont get wrong coloured next time. I agree with Debbie. The breeder should have known what colour he was. Would you mind PM'ing me the prefix of his breeder?

What a shame about the colour mix up,all the preperation, excitment & nerves without the cost is bad enough but then to have that happen, hope you can get it sorted with no extra cost to you especially as the breeder should have done if first off anyway, wether you want to show or not I wouldn't buy from a "breeder"who didn't register her babes.
Good luck for the next show look forward to hearing about a lot more successful day & a special kiss for Rasputin, right behind his ear please....x

Yeah a bit of a shame but at least I know he has potential :) and thanks for the support everyone :)
I did check on GCCF and she didn't do anything wrong by not registering - she provided me with a 4 gen pedigree and a certificate of mating which is all you have to do under GCCF rules... I gather it's not common practice though!
@Debbie I paid £400 for him which I think is pretty much the going rate in the UK. He also has darkened up quite a lot since we first got him and his dad is a blue silver which I'm guessing is where the mix-up has come from. Bit gutting though especially as I did say when we came to register him that I'd've registered him as a silver. But then he's my first pedigree and first MC so I happily admit not having much strength in my conviction! I also understand that the difference between blue silver and silver can be quite minimal.
@Wendy I'd like to see what response I get back to my email before PMing a prefix if that's ok?

I had a similar thing with one of my girls "Misty" We bought her from a breeder and she was registered as a Blue Smoke but after a few months it became quite obvious that she wasn't smoke at all and was in fact solid. I emailed Joan at the GCCF and explained the situation and she told me to confirm it in writinge closing a cheque for £15. I got back a new reg doc with the new colour within a few weeks.
Maybe it's because Misty was on the active register that i was allowed to change her registered colour without being the actual breeder i don't know. It's worth a phonecall to Joan if you don't get any joy from your breeder.
If i'm ever unsure about a colour of one of my kittens i always get advice from another breeder before registering it. (isn't that right Debbie560? re: Brown Classic Tabby tortie Girl/Boy :) )
Hope this helps.
PS. I think it's only fair that the breeder should reimburse you, considering the money you've lost through no fault of your own. I know I would if I cocked up like that!

Thanks for the support everyone!
Breeder emailed back and said would sort it, so hopefully should all be ok now... Will let you know when I hear from the GCCF...

Well, a month later I have heard back from the breeder... She has sent me what I need to change his colour but I will have to pay for it... I did (nicely) say that I understood it was normal for the breeder to sort this out under the circumstances but to no avail... It effectively means I'll have paid over £80 to register him if you take into account the original cost of registering then transferring him, then the show and now the amendment to the registration.
I'm not entirely happy I've got to say. I know an extra £13 isn't that much but it just seems unfair! I understand she doesn't normally register kittens (but provides the necessary documents) with an official body (GCCF/TICA/FB) which is why I agreed to pay the full registration costs initially, but given she made a mistake (which cost me money) I'd have expected her to cough up. Also, she microchips them which provides proof of ownership but in my view only registration with an official body really provides proof of pedigree which is, after all, what you're paying a premium for.
ARGH.

Haven't been on here for ages, but I was at the W of E and saw your cat; although I didn't know it was your cat at the time, only when I looked at the catalogue later.
Such a shame that you have been taken for a ride and left out of pocket... I never, ever let a kitten go unregistered, after all its just about the only thing that separates a properly bred MC from the product of a pet to pet breeder... (this is a horribly popular trend at the mo and will only lead to the gradual deterioration of the breed).
I have tiny girl kittens at home right now and my blood runs cold at the thought of them getting into the wrong hands.
Anyway I digress... don't give up on showing it can get quite addictive tho, the next GCCF show nearby (that you can enter) is the West Country at Hutton Moor in January, in my experience it is one of the best shows of the lot, there is tons of natural light in the hall so the cats always look their best.

Thanks Tivicoons :) think we're going to the National Cat Show in Dec, haven't sent off the stuff yet... A bit confused about what to put in the BOB box and whether 1st in a class in a show means first in an open only or includes side shows...
He's a beautiful cat and I love him to pieces but I wouldn't buy again from her... But oh well, you live, you learn!
Did we chat at the show or did you just see the demon kitten in passing?
-
I'm planning on doing the National with my kitten Oscar (although he will *just* be adult on show day). If your cat has a title - i.e. Champion/Premier/Grand Champion/Grand Premier etc, you put the Open class number in the BOB box. If your cat is untitled you don't need to put anything in the BOB box. Your cat will be considered for BOB anyway. I think "1st" means any class at a GCCF show. It should say at the front of the schedule somewhere. Otherwise email the show manager for clarification. Hope this helps

Thanks Wendy, advice very much appreciated! Maybe we will meet there :)
I've emailed the show manager (for L-Z entries) and haven't heard back yet... It would seem odd I think if it included side classes coz they don't count towards titles... Hopefully don't! Rasputin was 9 months and 4 days last time although he's still a kitten in my mind! Really hope we get a red card day, would definitely make up for the wrong colour disqualification last time!
