Sneezing bloody mucus
So we finally picked up our new kitten this past Sunday. I noticed the breeder had another cat that was sneezing and had a swollen eye. My kitten had a little bit of a crusty nose but I was so nervous picking him up and having to drive 2 hrs back home I didnt ask any questions and she didnt mention anything to me about him sneezing. Well he must have gotten car sick too because he made a large loose bowel movement in his carrier on the way home. I felt horrible he had to sit with it for so long and we had to smell it for so long!
When we got home I gave him a bath because he was covered in poop and noticed his nose was crusty with blood. We had a vet appointment for the next day so I figured I would just ask the vet to check it out. He sneezed and cried all night in our bedroom. The next day the vet told us he was healthy but had a cold and if he continued to sneeze to come back for meds. The next night he creid less and cuddled with us in our bed but was sneezing more now with blood. I have spots of snot and blood all over my sheets. I called the vet and he prescribed baytril in liquid form. I tried to give it to him but he started foaming at the mouth and spitting it out. I went back the next day and picked up pills. I was told to break them in to 4s and burry it in his wet food. He ate all food around the pill! I cant get this kitten to take his meds.
He now sounds very congested and is sneezing even more. His nose has a whistle to it now and his snot is thicker green. I feel so bad for him! The vet said hes 3.6 lbs he will be 3 months old exactly tomorrow. Since I recieved him sick, I dont know how much he really eats but it seems like he eats very small amounts right now. Ive been free feeding him dry about a handful a day and he eats about 1/4 of a 3 oz can of wet. I expected him to eat a lot more than this as a growing kitten. He drinks a lot. Hes VERY playful. You would never think he was sick all he wants to do is play and run around. Hes pooping several times a day and its solid.
This is making me very nervous. I dont want him to fall sicker. This is a critical period for him and I to bond. Its very hard when hes sneezing in my face every few minutes.
Any advice? Has anyone else dealt with this? Is he eating enough? How can I get him to take the baytril?

Personally I would return the kitten to the breeder, but I guess you love him now. How old is he? I expect a male at 12 weeks to be 2kg [4lb 6oz] This is not a cold, it is probably either, herpes, chlamydia or Calici, which is treatable, Azithromycin would be my choice for a kitten. But, you need to be on top of it, Calici or colds, are virus', and antibiotics cannot cure them, but deal with the side effects of bacterial infection, which is probably what you are seeing from the nasal discharge. Even if insured you will not get it back, because the kitten was already sick, and be prepared, this may cost you a pretty penny, and possibly leave your kitten with permanent rhinitis, or recurrent bouts of sneezing etc. Are the gums red? has the vet checked for ulcers in the mouth? also test for calici, Herpes and Chlamydia as each treatment will be slightly different, and herpes is for life. Also contact the breeder NOW to see what help she/he will provide, before they can say the illness was contracted after purchase.
Use a pill popper to get the Baytril down, make sure the dosage is absolutely correct, as it is titrated to weight. Buy some Royal Canin convalescent diet powder from your vet, mix it warm, and syringe feed it as much as you can. to supplement feeding, take care as kitten can choke easily if it has a blocked nose, so allow time for swallowing and breathing.
I'm sorry, but you have bought some trouble, and the breeder needs to know.

What back up have you had from the breeder over this,I take it you have been in touch..... Its not good that she had another one sitting there with swollen eyes & sneezing... I take it babe is fully vaccinated ?
What can you do, might pay to ask the vet if babe could have inj form of baytril to kick start the course at least it has had one days coverage to get it going, seems a bit strange to say its healthy if it has a cold because it isn't,healthy is when there is nothing wrong & it obviously came from the breeder with it,if you can tuck little one into a towel could you get the quarter of a tablet straight down the hatch,if you give it a go remember to hold across the head quite firm & tip head right back, sounds hard but basically he needs to be looking at the ceiling to get a good shot at it... Remember with food they have to smell it to eat it so with a blocked up nose like that he won't be so tempted & most probaly wet would go down a lot easier than dry, just warming it through a bit will give off a lot stronger smell. Put him on some extra vitamins as well you can get some special kitty ones, whatever you can get into him at this point will help build him up....
As for the poo coming home that was bad luck bless him, most probaly it was only the journey,I picked up my first babe at a halfway mark & ended up in the ladies toilets using the hand soap to bath his bottom end.
At least he sounds a happy little fella if he is still playing & hopefully you can soon get him sorted out, fingers crossed for both of you & that you can soon get some serious bonding going....xxx

I notified the breeder. She apologized and offered to pay for his antibiotic. When I wrote her back telling her how much it cost for his meds, she never responded again. So you think this is more than just a cold? I googled "cat sneezing blood" and everwhere I read said this was common for a URI. I certainly do love him now. This is my first kitten thats actually mine, we've bonded so well. Hes just a perfect little guy. I feel like I couldnt just give him back and not know that I did the best I could for him. I feel heartbroken. The vet checked him out, he did a physical and checked his poo. He saw his nose..why would the vet tell me hes fine if hes not? I am so confused right now. I dont know what to do...

Hes 3 months old. Hes had 2 of his 3 dose vaccine. The breeder said if he had both vaccines by 12 weeks old, usually they dont need a 3rd. My vet said hed like to do a 3rd next month anyway. I burritoed him earlier and tried the liquid again. I think he swallowed most of it. He did a little drool but not like the first try. I am going to buy a pill shooter tonight.

my poor boys caught flu after a show, luckily they didnt get it badly , just went quiet and very obviously felt like we do when we get it . Baytril worked on both of mine , i was given powder and added it to a small amount of tuna which went down well. luckily never had a recurance of it and both in fine fettle now. Good luck with your new babe , my vet advised as jackie did to warm food up to make it smelly and lots of tlc just like you would want if you felt low.

Just an update for everyone. After several days on Baytril, we saw no results. I spoke to the breeder who has another kitten with a similar issue, her vet gave her Azithromycin. That seemed to be helping her other kitten, so my vet gave me Azithromycin as well. We are on day 4 of a 5 day dose of Azithromycin 0.68 ml per dose. I am seeing less sneezing but he is still sneezing. There is less nasal discharge but its still there. He still gets a crusty nose and its still fairly thick mucus. He tries to smell everything but I can tell he is still stuffy.
The vet checked his mouth and said its is fine. Hes eating well. I am free feeding him dry ( id estimate he eats about a cup a day) and 1/2 3oz can of wet in the morning and the other half at night. Hes full of energy, very wild! Hes all play! Hes pooping about 3 times a day. I had the vet check is poops and he said it was fine. I am just worried because there is only 1 dose left of Azithromycin and hes still having symptoms. The vet said this med is strong and should work. He doesnt want to do any bloodwork on him yet because hes so young and believes this will pass. Hes due for his 3 vaccine shot in 2 weeks. I am nervous for him to get this 3rd shot being that these symptoms came after his 2nd vaccine.
I am not sure if I am over-reacting here because this is my first kitten. The breeder is telling me he will be fine its just a virus that has to run its course. The vet is basically saying the same. He seems perfectly fine, its just this sneezing and congestion. Its been about 2 weeks now since Ive had him. How long do these things usually take to pass?
