hissing without reason
As the title suggests, lately, Neevie has been hissing without reason - she'll be on the couch, cleaning her fur, relaxed and suddenly "hsssss" then just resumes her cleaning like nothing happened - doesn't happen often, just a handful of times in her 3 years.
I thought she was just quirky, but then this morning she was sitting on the table, watching the birds while I watered my plants, and she yelped in pain and ran away to the door, and hissed again. then looked at me like "what? hiss? me? never..."
I looked on the table, there was nothing she might have hurt herself on...
I'm planning to take her to the vet this week, just to be on the safe side. But if any of you have any idea/suggestions on what to check, that would be welcome.
When we got her, the breeder did warn that she was born with a small hernia, but then our vet didn't notice anything and suggested it might just have resorbed itself. So that's the first thing we'll check, methink.

Hi Alekto, hernia's often do re-absorb, as such. The ones to be careful of are the ones that protrude and you can move in and out as they can become strangulated and cause all sorts of problems. Usually when a cat/kitten is neutered the vet will deal with this kind of hernia at the same time.
Does she hiss when you touch her in any specific spot e.g. back end by her tail, stomach etc? If not, then hopefully it is just a quirky thing.
One breeder I visited in Gloucester had a cat that used to growl instead of purr. It was quite surreal and very alarming until I got used to it!

thanks, yeah I hope so, I kind of was quite sure that was the case until this morning, when she did that "yelp" thing.... she doesn't like it when we touch the lower bit of her back, but it looks like it's just ticklish rather than painful. Otherwise there is not really anything else that sets her off, she LOVES being picked up in our arms, and just plonked over our shoulders, looking at the world from above, which tells me there is not really any problem there.
I also worry she might have swallowed something that is having trouble getting through (she still eats anything I leave lying on the floor or table) OR also, simple painful spasm somewhere, that just goes away as soon as it comes....
I still would like to get her checked, though, just in case...

I do agree. If in doubt get her checked out. No one knows their cat better than the owner.
It will be worth mentioning that she has places she doesn't like being touched and about her swallowing anything and everything.
It's as much for peace of mind for yourself and so you can stop worrying.
Let us know when she's had her check-up. I'm sure she'll be fine

Cant offer any advise Alekto but hope Neevie has her problems resolved soon, I know what a worry it can be if you just dont know what the problems is, oh how much easier life would be if they could just talk x
