Help needed. Don't know if I should get My Maine Coon a kitty companion!

My darling Leo is 2 years old. He is a laid-back guy, and we adopted him at 1.2 years. He was in a home with a cat that he didnt get along with. Im not sure why, if it was due to activity or age difference or what, however his previous owners decided to find a new home because the other, older cat would not come out of the one bedroom. Since we adopted him, Leo has been an only cat. He is playful, but has grown more and more lazy. I dont know if he is just bored... or what, i try to play with him, and he plays for a few minutes then gets bored or something and lays down. Im not sure if this is just his personality, but he used to seem to have more energy. Im at a loss, ive bought him every toy I thought he might enjoy playing with me with, but he doesnt seem interested in them. I want him to have a happy fulfilling life, im just worried hes bored with us and his surroundings! I am wondering if he wouldnt like another cat around to play with. I know he didnt get along with the previous cat he lived with, but the circumstances are unknown as to why. I was wondering if anyone on here has an Only cat that they got a playmate for? how did you approach it? .....any ways of knowing if my cat likes other cats? should I get a female since he is an alpha male?
    Thanks everyone

I find that the males do tend to suddenly go into more of a couch potato than the girls thats why when people ask is there is any difference between the two sexes I always reckon if you want a village idiot with lights on & no one at home get a boy & if you want a busy busy cat get a girl, have you tried playing with a laser light that used to spark our lazy boy up & would getting him running about plus you can take the beam up the wall which makes them stretch up as well & give them a workout,I think he is just maturing into a typical male, although there are some exceptions to the rule as with all things...!
Also they are a pack animal so although a few are happy to be loners it is nice for them to have the company of another feline as well,I have brought both sexes into my household the first couple of times no problems at all but when the 4th male came the others were very anti & then when two more boys entered I had even more antis, all worked out though luckily so was very worried about bringing the new girl into the fold but the breeder & others said they bet I would have no trouble as she was a little girl & they were right, every cat even the antis just loved her from day 1 so I would now say perhaps a little lady for him to luv could be the way to go if you think you should go that route...x

My old boy is 18 and had been solitary all his life. I guess he thought he was going in to retirement. I had other ideas and got 3 MC babies to jog him along a bit in his old age They took a while to get accustomed to each other but they got there. Old boy loves watching the babies, occasionally joining in with their naughtiness and washing them. Like JCKerrison, they all love the laser pointer. Each of them have their favourite other toy from a vast array. I try to change them round so they don't get bored but they always seek out their favourites.
