Is my cat a maine coon?

Hello. I adopted this beauty from an animal shelter a few months ago and people have told me she looks like a maine coon. I've tried to do some research and she certainly seems to have some characteristics of a maine coon. I'm hoping some of you can tell me what you think.

If you have Googled MCC traits you'll find sites that list the traits from nose to tail.
Since MCC are so popular the more of these traits your cat has the more likely she has some Maine Coon Cat ancestry.
Regardless she's a very pretty kitty.

Hi Silversparkle... your kitty is a ravishing beauty indeed - I adore solid black cats. What is her name?
As for your question: a Maine Coon is only an MC when all her ancestors are MCs. If you don't have pedigree papers, there is no way of telling. All you can say your stunning girl is a "Maine Coon type".
The MC breed was developed using American longhaired cats that looked a lot like your girl, so it is probable she shares common ancestors with pedigree MCs.
Anyway, a warm welcome to the forum from me. I hope to see more of your lovely lass.

Silly me!! Her name is Athena. That's the name she had at the shelter. I planned on changing it but while I was trying to decide on a new name, I had to call her something and I just got used to athena! So I kept her name the way it was. Thanks for the warm welcome

I think Athena is a wonderful name ... very befitting for such a divine feline. ;-)
