Good advice, and you could also try along with the above, a cat attracting spray on the scratch post, like catnip spray, and a cat repelling spray on the furniture, like lemon juice possibly diluted with a drop of water? Or cover the furniture temporarily with something they cannot scratch, just while the training period is going on. Like a sheet of plastic film? Might not look great for a while, but better than shredded furniture.
