Kitten with torn ear
Hi all
I am currently looking for another kitten. Went to a different breeder that was recommended to me. Everything seemed ok except they have only been breeding Maine Coons for 3 years. They showed me a little girl which is their only available kitten from a litter of 5. Girl is very cute but when I was holding her I noticed that her ear was freshly torn. In fact a small section of her ear had been ripped from the top to (almost) the bottom - you know how you sometimes see it on feral and tom cats. It was bleeding and the breeder s said they hadn't noticed and would put on cream. They said one of the kittens' siblings would have torn her ear while playing. Now I have never seen a kitten with a torn ear - not even in the moggie kitten my grandmother used to have - so I'm wondering if this is a red flag? Also I think the kitten's ear may need stitches and not just cream or else it'll always have a section hanging off. What do you think - red flag or not?

Obviously not being able to see it is hard to be sure what could be done but for sure think that would be up to a vet to decide not the owners....if it is fresh they might try to staple or put in a couple of stitches to help pull it together, very often furries that have torn ears are left with battle scars but it is normally only a small niche if it has had proper attention..... It is possible for a claw to hook & tear in play etc but would have felt a lot happier if the reply was oh thanks we will get it straight down to the vets...... You very often find that the newest breeders are the ones that are trying very hard to establish themselves & one would expect to want to make sure all is ok,not saying of course that they might also have cream added in to help with the healing process.....

I'd rather not give their name but they are a registerred breeder here and they're testing for HCM etc, they're showing their cats so I'm sure everything is ok from that point of view. I guess people are just different in what they view warrants a vet trip. If it was my kitten and a bit of it's ear was hanging off I'd definitely be bringing it to the vet just to see if anything could/should be done. I was surprised that the breeder hadn't noticed the tear and also by the response: ''Oh I'll have to put some cream on that''. The way that ear looked, cream isn't going to do anything - it really looked liked it needed stitches or glue - without that the poor kitten is likely to have a permanent gap in it's ear and it was such a thin section of the ear almost sliced off that the tissue might die off completely. I have decided to pass on this kitten and will go with a different breeder.
