How often should i be grooming?

I finally brought my new MC home a week ago Friday after waiting what seemed like forever (I first saw her when she was 4 wks). I have owned cats before but she is the first long haired cat I have owned. My only experience is my mums cat who was a long haired rescue who hated being groomed and was at the vets getting shaved every couple of months.

I have been grooming her everyday as she had a few matts that I had to cut out when I first got her and I wanted her to get used to being groomed.

Her fur is now looking really greasy and I am not sure if it is due to me grooming her too often.

I just wanted to know how often people are grooming their cats as I feel I may be paranoid due to my mum's cat.

    Thanks

Hi I have a 3year old Male rescue Maine Coon. He was 11 wks when I adopted him. I started grooming him right a way, but only about 1-2 times a week. He LOVES it now. He will roll from side to side so I don't miss a spot. I was NEVER a cat person until I got this cat, he has been the best pet, and is hysterically funny. He is not the neatest cat, always has something hanging from his ears or whiskers from his adventures outside. He is very gentle, maybe 13-14 lbs and still growing. Love this guy!Attachment 3416How often should i be grooming?-009.jpg

How often to groom is really dictated by two things, type of coat & your choice, grooming certainly causes another bond between you & your cat so doing it daily shouldn't be a problem, all mine differ as to how often I need to groom them but I always have a brush & comb near by & very often just do a "quickie"....
I wonder if the coat has gone greasey due to the change of enviroment or food,if you have a brush rough coat up sprinkle a little powder all over & then brush the wrong way right from the base of the hair all over & then smooth coat back down, should absorb the grease & hopefully you will have a fluff ball back again,I use the slicker brush to do this on mine as I find it easier but started off using a babys hairbrush.....
Shame she had matts when you first got her though but a very good idea to put yourself into the position of not having to go to the vets to get her shaved, fingers crossed that you can get her coat sorted & pictures of her please...x

I always read in bed before going to sleep, this was also the time I would comb Samantha.
It's a good thing that your kitty like you to groom her.
My cat was really prone to matting on her britches.
It a lot easier to prevent mats then to deal with them once they've form, it's hurt to comb or cut them out as their skin is sensitive.

Thanks for the feedback. I will try with powder now and hopefully she will be nice and fluffy again. Ill let you know if it works.

Here is the most recent pic I have of her.

Well its been a day and she is still a fluffball instead of a greaseball. Thanks for your advice.
